Hi

Recently I looked at side fairing protection on the web and I saw some small bars that just stick out a bit from the fairing not hoop type but just a single bar or angle metal design. Can't find again and think they were German. Anyone any idea about these type?

Can't help you on that, but could they be like the OEM engine guards? Because 'Off-The-Road' DE, make those out of metal, so heavy duty.

With a bit more research I have found them see here;-

Anyone tried these as I don't like the look of the huge hoops eventhough I can see they may well protect more in a side tumble.

It looks like they used a CNC machine to make metal versions of the OEM plastic pieces. Laid over gently on the side, the bike will rest on these and the hand grip.
However -
We've had a number of people here drop the bike on the left side and put the fan into the radiator. That and the rather thin sump cover are the two weakest points on this bike.

Thanks and all understood.

Has anyone fitted these? With or without OEM engine guard? Would they give upper protection to the radiator and battery side panels?

Photos would be great as the OTR site photos are not brilliant to see above info.

Thanks.

The OTR & OEM guards are functional for street drops, but not off pavement, IMHO. If you want to save your fan/radiator and plastic, buy crash bars.

And even that is about 50/50 depending on the off road terrain you fall on. A left side fall in deep sugar sand is BAD news for your fan. ???

Thanks for all the replies.I bought the YAM engine bar set new with the bike so thought these OTR crash pads may work for the higher up vunerable plastic fairings covering the radiator/battery etc but it may be these wont be necessary as the Yam bars will give some protection to the uppers. I don't really go off pavement and I don't want to add the upper bars as I find them a bit ugly and cumbersome and adding upper weight but I get they will offer damage limitation to the vulnerable side panels. I have contacted OTR and asked for some better additional images showing them fitted to a S10. Its a personal choice and we are all aware of the risks and have to make and stand by the decision.

That decision will be made once I have more images and better understanding how if at all these crash pads will help or be unnecessary.
I will probably lay my bike over onto the YAM bars to see where the protection is good or lacking.

You have to decide what works for you and your riding. ::008:: In regards to the OTR product you linked to, in my humble opinion, it's not going to provide any more protection than the OEM protectors they replace, they just look nicer and will be a bit more durable. Mine survived a few drops w/o damage, but others have reported the plastic ones can break in a hard drop/slide event.

I understand your feelings about upper bars. Since you have the Yamaha OEM bars already, should you change your mind about your needs for upper side panel protection or protecting the side mounted radiator and fan, you might consider the Rumbux add on bars that fit to the Yamaha OEM bars. They replace the upper hoop with one that gives side protection for the panels and radiator/fan. It's a cheaper option than buying full crash bars from another vendor and designed to fit with the OEM product. PM me if you ever want more details.

Could you post a couple of pics of this combo? My factory crash bars are being installed and I'd like to check out your setup. Thanks!

For me I have decided not to proceed with either large hoop type or the OTR small versions at this time. Many thanks for all the help and advice. :)
