Dead battery....replacement suggestions??

My battery was dead yesterday...completely dead, no lights, nothing. I made sure i didn't leave the key on. the bike had only been sitting a week. I put the bike on a 1 amp motorcycle charger and took the wifes bike to work. Went home at lunchtime and put the trickle charger on it. This morning the light on the charger was green. The bike started but I could tell the battery wasn't really up to the task. ran the bike and tested the voltage and could tell the charging system was working. Shut the bike off and put the battery tender back on. It took a good ten minutes to turn from red to flashing green. So I guess a bettery is in my future. My bike is just over a year old. The battery has never seemed overly strong....

Any suggestions on a replacement battery? I have always had great luck with westco batteries in the past but can't seem to find one for the Tenere.

Thanks,

Larry

You might want to make sure you don't have a avoltage leak someplace. For a batery to only last one year is a bit odd, unles you keep something like a GPS on when the bike is off.

Maybe another stock or up grade to a lighter more powerful battery like a Shorai.... But check your bike out like the others have said.. :)

I'd replace it and then troubleshoot further if your symptoms continue. It's difficult to know the circumstances of when/how the original battery was setup and infant mortality is common. Even if you have a charging or discharge issue, you want to start with a known good battery.

There are some who believe the boutique (e.g., Optima) or established name (e.g., Yuasa) name batteries are worth the extra money; I'm not one of them. I buy what I can find cheap online that I can confirm is an exact drop-in replacement. You do want a sealed AGM (rather than a conventional vented wet battery) since the battery is mounted in an unusual position, but most of the replacement batteries are AGMs these days.

Or you could go the lightweight Shorai route. But I'm still a bit skeptical that these batteries have the reserve of long-term cranking power we need, especially with the random starting issues with our bikes.

Thanks for all the replies.

Going to replace the battery and then check like you all recommended. I'll just find a bettery that fits and has at least the same amont of CCA as the stock battery.

My gut feeling, by the way the bike has been, is that I just got a bad battery. I've never had the charging system go in any of the modern Japanese bikes I've owned. The battery just going completely dead doesn't seem to point to a electrical issue.

Thanks,

Larry

Do you have access to a 1amp battery charger... not a battery tender? Tenders will usually not reserect a dead battery, they are meant to maintain a good battery. If your stock (Yuasa?) is a 14amp hour, put it on for a good 8-12 hours at 1amp. You may get some more life out of it.

I noticed my battery isn't what it was last year either. I'm probably due for a new one soon, too. It seems the stock Yamaha batteries only last about a year for me. :'(

I'm in the UK but the advice should apply your side of the Atlantic.

I was helping someone identify a suitable battery for his VFR and noticed it is the same battery for the S10. So, a quick search of several suppliers found there are many alternatives. In the UK, the best value seemed to be a Motobatt branded AGM battery from a shop on Ebay. Seemed to be 60% of the price of a replacement Yuasa YTZ12S.
