If you were moving a motorcycle in a u haul along with some household goods would you build a frame around the bike and strap it to that frame? Is that overkill? 1600 miles not around the block. Any other suggestions.....? Riding is not an answer.

I helped a friend move. Things shifted on us and damaged his tank. Do more than you think you need to.

FYI, Many truck rental companies prohibit bikes being hauled inside their trucks. You might consider a trailer behind the truck to avoid any issues should something go wrong, and to keep the bike from being damaged by other bits inside the truck.

I've used UHaul trucks. In the old days they had wood floors and if holes didn't already exist from a previous customer, you could discretely drill a few 1/4" holes and dirty them to look old before returning the truck. Nowadays, they are all aluminum floors and you need to tie to the walls.

For halfway across the country, carefully tying off will work. Or you might consider putting the bike on a 4X8 of 3/4" plywood with carriage bolts that you could tie down to. The entire 4x8 will slide around if not tied tight into a corner of the box.

I moved from Wisconsin to Idaho and I had stuff packed in so well that just putting it on its centerstand was fine. I threw a movers blanket between it and the stuff I was packing. I had no troubles.

Trailer OR a "crrate" built around the bike. Moving's tough and stuff does shift/rub...Been there and done that.
