Crazy Idea - Would you race your Super Tenere?

Ok not for a win or points or anything like that, but a one-time event. I have this bucket list and I am hearing the Catalina GP is going to happen again and it is one I've always wanted to run. The dilemma is that my only bike is the Super Tenere. Now in order to ramp up with a new bike for one event is going to be potentially costly and borrowing a bike is possible but not realistic, so now my brain is starting to think like an old crazy desert racer and I'm eyeing the Super T because you know, it does pretty darn good if the conditions are right and I think the type of dirt on that island could be suitable for the most part. Obviously just a cruise pace to finish. So is this CRAZY from a rational point of view or would you entertain the idea of racing your Super Tenere?

Well, I think someone like JaimeV would. I on the other hand have my hands full on an actual dirt bike.

Could you? yes of course. The bike has all the components to handle such a race, with some mods of course. I say do it, let me know if you need a pit crew (unless I decide to get in it as well)

The riders in front of you sure would not want to crash with the 585 lb bike to run their ass over! But it sure would be fun go for it.

I have mixed emotions about this for you, or more specifically for the S10. You will definately win the "attention whore" award if you do it, but, unless you're a half decent off roader, the bike might look less capable than it is, leading onlookers to believe that it's a real POS off road. I'm sure most will realize that the bike is out of its element, but there is no sense in glorifying it. Now, if Pastrana asks you if he can ride it... ::025::

PLEASE just do it!

For WFOpete. LOL

Seriously, you only live once and although a few folks make it to the summit, it's "climbing the mountain" that matters. Regardless of how far you make it. The folks that tell you that it can't be done are sippin coffee looking out the window at you ON THE MOUNTAIN. :)

One really good drop on the Tenere could do a couple thousand dollars of damage and your insurance SURE won't cover it.
You may consider whether it's worth picking up a dirt bike off Craigslist and sell it after, even if you need to rent or buy a cheap trailer. For example:

Perfect YZF250 for $1600, then re-sell it:

The classic Ol'Faithful for under a grand:

The $500 special:

Bucks-up 450YZF for $2200:

Just remember, it is YOU that is taking the risk and not us. We will be rooting for you all of the way, but the decision is yours to make... Hey, have fun in whatever you decide to do... (that's what advice my Dad would have given me... LOL) ::018::

After getting off a FJ for a Tenere more than a year ago I realized just how much I had missed trail riding. A couple of friends and I went to the Rockies for 3500 miles and 9 days. I'm 61, and also realized my own short comings as well as the Tenere's. It's been a long winter in Iowa, gives a guy a chance to over think things. So I bought a KTM 500 xc-w to find other short comings. I personally would Never! race a Tenere anywhere! Find yourself a nice plateable woods bike and have some fun. Leave the Tenere for what it does best. Can't wait to get back to the Rockie's! The Tenere did everything I asked, but I'd like to ask more!

Why not?

Only depends of the track difficulty and your off road ability… come on... DO IT and show the world what the ST can do

Please show videos, pics, tells us how it ends… but take care!! ::012:: ::012::

Thanks for all the encouragement and realisms! As I think about it, the more I am convincing myself to do it - just something different especially since a BSA is out of the picture! Obviously there are several unknowns right now that I will need to think about since the conditions have to be really good for the Super Tenere. So lot's of factors play into it. But if all is good then the bike can do it in my mind. Sure hope it plays out, what an awesome place for a motorcycle race...
