Crash Bars

The only mods so far have been OEM skid plate and engine guards. Couple of newbie questions:

Are the OEM engine guards supposed to protect the "plastic" side panels if the bike is to laid over? It does not look it to me.

Do they make a crash bar that will fit on bike with the engine guards on. I have searched the major manufacturers, but it looks like they would all connect to the bike in the same places as the engine guards.

Thanks for your help.

I agree with TC I've been on the right hand side a lot with no damage to the plastic.

Thanks for the quick reply. I may have to call those guys and talk to them. Both of those look like they would conflict with the side mounting points and then the bar that wraps around the bike to the other side..the one that you can lights to.

I guess depending how the handlebars are positioned when the bike lays over depends on how much clearance from the plastic side panels. The engine guards stick out to the side prety good ways, but there is a lot of realestate above the bars.

I only worry about this because I am known for pushing beyond my experience level and I am sure at some point I will lay this bad boy down on a rocky trail!

When I crashed the only thing that touched the ground was the Altrider crash bars, scraped the right exhaust pipe, right foot peg, and popped off (and broke) the right-side OEM pannier. If I had a skidplate it would have protected the exhaust pipe. The damage to the exhaust pipe is superficial and insignificant.

Another consideration is a protection plate for the water pump.

Here is my attempt at protecting the exhaust and water pump. I have heard the water pump guard, if hit just right, can do engine case damage. But I am not too hard off road, so I am taking my chances and leaving it on. The header guards are altrider. The picture I posted is even the same one they used on their website, Thanks Altrider! I love their products!

Yes they do. I have dropped mine several times once hard on a slick surface and it slide about 30'. The only thing that hit is the bar (that will not bend) and the end of the hand guard. No damage exept a scrapes on the Engine Guard and with the bar across the front it protects the pipes and the waterpump. I also attached my Alt Rider plate to it so it is not attached to the engine in front.

Easy access to my side panels and all the protection.

Thanks! Pictures are worth a 100 words!

30'..I hope you came out OK..Thinking of picking the beast up by myself on the side of the mountain was worrying me as well, but I found the youtube video of someone picking theirs up and it really didnt look to bad. I though about carrying a comealong (sp?) on my CO trip, but then I realized no trees to connect to! :-\ Hopefully it will not be an issue.

To further answer one of your initial questions, Touratech crash bars keep the OEM guards. Although they are one of the most, if not THE most expensive out there. I think I'm going with the Altriders.

I have the AltRider bars, and they are awesome. Combined with Jaxon's rock destroying bashplate and K-60s, my S10 can get down a trail it shouldn't be on. Love it when I bump into guys on 250s coming the other way... "Dude - are you lost? I didn't know bikes that big could get out here!" :D
