I want to put a set of crash bars on the ST - BUT - have no idea functionally which set available may be best for our application.

From looking around the web, there are a few options; Yamaha OE, AltRider, SW-Motech & R&G. The R&G just seem a bit to minimal. The SW-Motech look nice but have no lateral cross-bar support like the AltRider bars have. None of these 3 have the same protection for the lower engine block like the OE bars, but the OE bars seem a bit cheap, don't protect the tank and seem overpriced.

I am leaning towards the SW-Motech bars but am looking for opinions or alternatives?

TIA

I had SW Mo's on my KLR and just installed SW Mo's on my Tenere last night. I like them. I like the look. I took a severe fall on my KLR and not even a scratch on my fairing. I think they will all serve the purpose. If you go down hard enough to do the kind of damage that destroys your fairing, you're probably gonna nuke the bars as well. I dunno. I'm a conservative rider but I suspect that, for the majority of us, they will all work. Most of my drops will be in the parking lot.

SW Mo's are easy to install, relatively inexpensive, easy to replace and/ior get parts for and they look good on the bike. They will serve you well. As will the others. Good luck. R

I put the Altrider ones on. All would probably work but I was impressed with Altriders R&D work. And I was in Seattle so I picked them up at the store and talked to them for a while(I also used their skidpan and several other of their alloy guards. They all look great and really set thye bike apart . They went on easy & look great

I think I'm liking my H&B. Before I fitted them I was thinking maybe they don't give enough coverage of the side panels. Maybe they don't if your aim is to prevent the slightest scratch to the panels (but I think you'd be unlucky). For me though it protects the important stuff and has the bracing side to side that some of the others lack. Also getting panels off is no problemo...

Price is roughly the same as the SW-Motech.

Put on the Altriders last nite. Very Beefy! Also have their skid plate, H/B racks and Caribou bags. Heading to Potter County as wew speak. Yes, you can get both side covers off with a little wiggling and patience. 8)

picking up the bike tonight and Altrider bars are going on tonight. Altrider bars protect the lower engine, one of thier videos showed the bike laying on its side and all that would touch the ground was the pegs, hadlebars and crash bars. You can get them at Revzilla, great company to buy from. Super fast shipping and it is free shipping.

I was on RevZ's site today and didn't see any AltRider bars listed, did see the Givi bars though. I also saw this new Givi windscreen that looks interesting . . . http://www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/givi-af447-adjustable-windscreen-super-tenere-xt1200z-11

I am not terribly far from their store, been there a few times now, may take a ride over next week and see what they may have for the ST.

Well, the Givi sure beat all the others on price. How do you think some highway pegs might mount on the Givi bars?

I like the looks of these Touratech units but I am sure they will be expensive if they ever make it over to this side of the pond.

FYI... I called Revzilla and asked if they had the altrider bars... He laughed and said NO... I then was just BS'ing for a second asking a few questions and he said, "can you hold for a few minutes" ? I said SURE!..................................................
He came back and said they are not on the site but they have them and we can take your order. So I ordered !!! WoooooooHoooooo

Persistence paid off........... :D

Oh Damn it! I ordered the SW-Motech's this afternoon after an email from Chris at RevZilla didn't show they carried them! Oh well, the Motech's look pretty good and I ordered the extra foot peg's for them as well. I will be sure to give them some greif when I go visit them next week, wish they had weekend hours at the store there instead of weekday only.

I have the SW-Motech bars...I like the look and protection, and you can get the side panels off, while installed.

I also considered the Alt-Rider bars; Liked the design, but didn't think my falls would be severe enough to warrant that much weight or protection. Another advantage of the SWM bars is the freeway peg bolt-on kit.

The Rumbux bars are excellent. Frame mounted only - no attachment directly to the engine.
They work well having tested them twice now - dangit!
I have not had any clearance issues when cornering, even riding two-up.
EricV, a member here, sells them.
