Crash bar advise wanted.

I do not think I paid a lot more for my SW-Motech ones which I am happy with, but they look good for the cash and feedback seems good.

Not so much a huge fan of SW Motech, but the kit is fairly good for the money, and the post sales support has always been spot-on.....


I get most my bike kit from Chainspeed who are in your little country somewhere and on the odd occasion something has not been spot on they have sorted it right away, even getting me new locks for my panniers cause I moaned about them when having another part replaced (also replaced FOC a bit out of warranty)

I have had fantastic protection with the altrider crash bars. ::026:: I have gone down hard three times off road and besides wiping mud and dust the bike has came out perfect everytime. The altrider bars are bolted on in six places and distubute the weight of the impact and bike. So my field use has been 10/10. Thats all i can say about that. ::002::

I have touratech crash bars.. twice hard "used" offroad.. need to be straighten littlebit.. like them.. and good as footrest on highway :)

Can you get the panels off without removing the SW bars?

Is there any problem/concerns with the Yamaha OEM kind? My riding will be probably 80/20 street/gravel forest service roads. Nothing I would consider "hard core." Just want something so that if I do slip on gravel, it's somewhat protected.

AltRider bars have held up to some abuse from me. 30mph in sand and nothing but minor scratches to the bars. Also lost it on a hill climb into cantaloupe sized boulders with no damage to the bike. If you want crash bars for strength look no further, if you want them to mount lights on etc try what you want.

Hate to say it, you get what you pay for ::014:: ::021::

You can certainly get the battery side panel of with the SW=Motech Bars.

Not so sure about the other side as I have never taken it apart, I assume it comes away with the fan assembly attached, in which case I doubt it would come off with bars in place, then again how often does this panel need to come off?

The fan assembly stays in place when you remove the left side panel, but, as you say, it is rare that it would have to come off. You can remove 3 screws from the left side and that gives you enough room to remove the side tank bolt when you want to raise the tank. Never had that cover off in the 34,0000 miles I put on my 2012 S10. Here is a pic of my 14 when I had all the panels off for painting.

MONGO MOTO , yes i bought a set of these crashbars when they first came out on ebay ...there better than the givi ones i had on my 2011 tenere , a lot stronger & cover more of the plastics , easy to fit as well ..if i had anything to complain about , they are a bit tight on the throttle side [ were the electrics are ] and you have to wriggle the side panel a bit to get it off , but only a two minute job & no big deal....yes i would definetly buy these they are built like a brick shxt house ..

I wish there was a upper crash bar that was built from "Altrider quality" materials, (1" stainless?) but without the huge upper hoop that almost every crashbar, regardless of brand, uses to cover the majority of the plastic side panels with. Kind of like extending the OEM plastic engine guards out a bit, and up a bit, but without large hoops. I love how that Italian Sand-master Tenere looks with the side panels as part of the paint scheme, without big hoops covering that up.

It'd be less protection for really bad or awkward falls, but would still be enough protection for me.
