Just had a 12000m service on my S10. The bill came to £321.54 which was more than I expected.

How much are others paying for this service in the UK?

It would help if you listed off what your dealer did on your receipt. If they followed the manual verbatim for each service interval line item, maybe that price is possible. I'm a DIY'er on this bike give how easy it is to wrench on, except maybe a valve check adjustment, so anything beyond fluids/filters seems pricey to me.

That is about 20000km. 321.54 pounds is about 5868.65 Rands that is about 525.63$. Now that is way to much for us in SA. At most 3200R. But I did service for the same distance for 2,200R about 200$.

Would you mind giving us a a list of what was done and what the consumables cost?

Here's a mention of Cycle World's 12000 mile service

http://www.cycleworld.com/2013/04/30/yamaha-super-tenere-long-term-test-update-3/

At $322 it's almost exactly the cost in dollars as yours is in £'s - which seems to be a good rule of thumb for a lot of things when comparing US to UK prices...

Also a good rule is to do the easy services yourself if possible... the and the !2,000 mile one is pretty easy. You should start saving up for the 24,000 mile valve check though!

I've not had the 12k service, but the costs of my 6k service, that included changing the rear pads that I supplied, from my local independent, including vat were:

Oil - £23.94
Yamaha Oil Filter - £11.69
Diff Oil - £3.54
Washers - £1.20
3 Hours Labour - £151.20 (£42+vat per hour)

I asked him to spend as much time as he needed on it as it was the first time he had seen the bike (I think it may have been the first ever S10 he's seen). I use him for all my family's bikes as he is so good. All2wheelers in Poole, Dorset, I highly recommend them.

I would question the labor hours. I do my own oil changes and it takes less than 20 minutes. They charged 3 hours?

To get to the plugs my dealer removed both side panels, tank, airbox etc took them about 2 hours to do the plugs, I agree the oil and filter is not a long job, but the 12k also includes (or should) final drive oil (OK, only another 10 minutes) and throttle body balance.

Add in a few other checks such as a general look around / tyre kick etc and a test ride and I can see how you could spend 3.5 hours on the service....

... but my problem is I suspect a lot of dealers do the bare minimum and charge the "book" time.

Your last point has caught my attention. The dealers at my place used to ask for the bike to booked in for a day at least. So I asked them why, I was not satisfied with the explanation. Consequently, I take my bike in and wait. The service fees fell considerably. Since it is out of warranty, I do all the services except plugs, valves and some other difficult to do technical work. I change the oils between 5,000 - 10000km.
