Is that working with a plain inkjet, as opposed to a LaserJet? I know some of the inkjets on waterproof paper will bleed when wet.
That's a plain inkjet printer, Checkswrecks. The vinyl paper I used is actually from Inkpress Media, not Papilo, and is classified for both indoor and outdoor use. Papilo makes a similar product.
In order to waterproof the ink on the decal, first I let it dry thoroughly (usually overnight). Then I overspray the decal with UV resistant polyurethane spray (available in spray cans at places like Hobby Lobby). Several light coats, followed by a heavier wet coat to give the decal an even gloss. Using that method, I've never had a decal run from exposure to the elements.
The downside: Inkjet printer ink isn't UV stable, even with the overspray. Colors like red will start to fade after several months of exposure to direct sunlight (and on my helmet, direct sun is pretty much a constant).
The upsides: I can make multiple copies of the same decal, so they can be replaced as they fade. I have a whole sheet of my 82nd Airborne decals, to replace them as needed. Also, the decals can be changed as needed. Every time I add a new state to my travels, I just change the graphic image and print a new one.
