Hello all. Got a question about the oil light. 12 model 28000 miles. Owners manual and shop manual tell me that a low oil alarm is as follows. Flash for ten seconds pause for three seconds and repeat. My light is coming on and staying constant, neither manuls say anything about a constant light that I have found. Stay on for twenty or thirty seconds then goes back out. 2000 miles on 20/50 weight oil , yamaha filter. Just wondering if anyone has seen this.

The flashing is only when there's a problem:

This model is also equipped with a
self-diagnosis device for the oil
level detection circuit. If a problem
is detected in the oil level detection
circuit, the following cycle will be
repeated until the malfunction is
corrected: The oil level warning
light will flash ten times, then go off
for 2.5 seconds. If this occurs,
have a Yamaha dealer check the
vehicle.

If it comes on and stays on, add oil:

Oil level warning light
“”
This warning light comes on if the en-
gine oil level is low.

follow the Yamaha manual for oil quantity exactly.
Can't remember off the top of my head, without filter change it's 3L, with filter change it's 3.4L
Again, check your owners manual, and don't quote me.

What they said. But be prepared to top off the oil occasionally. Over 3k miles it's not much but has been required if I extend it to 5k miles.

Thanks fella's. I added about 6 ounces and have been keeping an eye on it. I change it by the manual 3.58 qt. With filter. First time I'd seen this so thought I'd ask.

If I don't ride mine for even a week. I'll take off from my house and not more than 1/4 mile later the light will come on. It'll go off a little while later maybe within another 1/4 mile.

If I leave it for a couple weeks like when the forks were being done. It stayed on for a mile or so. I turned off the bike and restarted. Light was then off. Oil level was sitting closer to the lower line…

I'm in the south east so I get to ride yr round. Back and forth to work every day, so not much sitting for the bike. The sensor could be what's going on. It's easy to get to and check if the adding a little doesn't work. I've never noticed any consumption at all.

I wouldn't think the thicker oil would make a difference. Book say for my climate it's fine. But then again the book says you can run most any weight

what b.lizard said.
If your oil level is ok, it's most likely the sensor acting up
