Code 14 on dash. Crank no start.

Go to start the bike tonight, long crank, slight backfire, further long crank tried WOT, still nothing. Looked at the dash and it has 14 instead of mileage.

Went into diag mode, shows 14 d:01 Searching that code leads me to inlet pressure sensor. Its plugged in. Not sure what the d:01 indicates but the 14 is the MAF.

MAF/MAP would make sense just looked at my MPG and it has taken a big hit in the last fill up. Had some slight hesitation, and a back fire the last two days on the first corner I take. Chalked it up to the cold, but now.... Oh another thing just popped in my head, It was staying at abnormal high RPM when pulling in the clutch around 3000 RPM, it would stay there for much longer than it should have. Again figured it was just the cold, and acted normal once warm.

Going to let it sit overnight with the battery disconnected to see what it does on reboot tomorrow. Just wanted to see if the big brains had thoughts I might be missing before shotgunning a $100 part at the bike.

Any other things I might look at?

No idle and high idle problem | Page 2 | Yamaha Super Tenere Forum is a thread I found. Sounds similar to what you're describing. Here's a couple of the posts.

Re: Idle speed problem min 800 max 3500

I know this is an old thread, but I was wondering if there was any re-occurrence in the idle problem?

Unfortunately I'm suffering an idling issue too now. My bike sat for a couple of weeks while I waited for new tyres, it was started once and ridden less than a 100m into a garage and then sat again for another couple of weeks until I got around to fitting the tyres. After fitting the tyres I went to start the bike to take it out for a test run and the idle jumped to 3.5k. I stopped it and started it again and the same idle speed. When I tried the throttle it then jumped to 4k and only dropped slowly to 3.5k again. I let the engine get up to temp, but still the idle speed stayed high.

I spoke to my dealer who said he'd never heard of anything like it and confimred this after ringing around a bit. He asked if I could bring the bike in as they no longer collect. I wasn't to keen on this idea, but thought I'd get over early on a Sunday morning when the roads were quiet. This time when I started the bike the idle speed jumped straight to 5k and within seconds the engine warning light came on and the idle cut to 800 and wouldn't respond to the throttle. Needless to say the bike was unrideable as it just jumped around with the throttle response all over the place.

I also disconnected the battery to see if that would have any effect as I remmeber the bike not starting after the first time the battery was disconnected. I hoped there'd be some simple fault code that would clear, no such luck. At least this time the idle stayed at 3.5k. Until I touched the throttle again and the revs shoot up to 5k and the cut to 800 with the warning lights on.

I have to arrange recovery to the dealer now and will leave the bike with them, but in the meantime anyone heard of anything similar?

When my Tenere was new it was doing the same thing.. I did the TB sync and CO and it fixed most of all that..

Good news is I found a used sensor on ebay for $20. So even if its not that part and it ends up having to go to the dealer I wont be mad about it.

If it’s a gen 1. Did it have the wiring recall done?
Yep Gen1, bought it used, don't know if it was one of the eligible ones. I ran the VIN when I purchased it and it had no outstanding recalls.

Thanks for the links I only searched for the code. Ran through those and found some stuff I should check for the heck of it. Seems there is a plug by the battery that gets full of sand in a couple of cases.

There were 2 wiring recalls. They should have a record of it. Mine smoked a headlight wire in 2014.

Certainly sounds like the inlet pressure sensor, rather than any loom issues.

IIRC, there is an output voltage range that the ECU expects to see, between 3.75 - 4.25 volts, so it should be possible to test your sensor before throwing dollars at the problem. I guess it could even be dirt build up or the electrical connection.

Good luck tracking this down.

Thanks for that. Going to get into it more today, just had time last night to peek in and see if it was plugged in.

Well new sensor showed up. Put it in. Still code 14, crank no start.

Not sure what to do from this point. Guess its time to go to a dealer. Wish I had a good one local, but is what it is.

Can we assume that you have remembered to clear the old code 14, available via the dash on a Gen1.
