Clutch was slipping pretty significantly under hard acceleration yesterday on a 60/mo trip.
On return trip it appeared to disappear. ?

I should get at least 60k/mi from my plates I reckon. ??

My clutch has worked perfectly (no basket / shudder issues).
I'll start by adjusting lever. If I still have slippage I'll open the case and inspect the plates.

Should I replace a perfect basket if I need to replace plates?

Who's got best availability / prices?

My Vstrom had the exposed slave rod that got gunked up and caused slippage. No chance of this on the s10, all enclosed. ??

Thanks!

60 months??? Thought I did well to get 4 wks off this summer.

40,000 miles is usually not a problem for this clutch but if you ride deep sand and are a clutch slipper, you could be seeing premature plate wear. If/when you inspect them check the steel plates for flatness and for abnormal scoring or discoloring. The basket should be fine. Look at the edges of the basket where the plate tabs impact for any wear marks. If you want a smoother engine, now is the time to replace the basket. Good luck on the trip.

Clutch plates can be as much of a consumable item as tires and brakes, so out of curiosity I took a quick look at your earlier posts. You did have previous posts about going through brake rotors and tires quicker than a lot of folks. While some folks can go over 100,000 miles, my impression is that you probably enjoy the bike with a bit more gusto than a lot of owners. Plus, it's easier to get into sand and other loose ground in California than a lot of places.
If you do need to open the clutch to replace the plates, replacing the basket would make sense and reports are that you would have a more enjoyable ride afterward.

The tenere has has the extra long push rod from left (clutch cylinder) to right (clutch basket) That is prob not your culprit, as there's no chain to fling crap in that particular spot. Some guys have reported wear of the ball ::015:: at the end of the push rod, but minimal to say the least. When I swapped baskets, I only replaced the basket itself, and installed a new gasket. Everything else looked good. I ride my bike like a O:) so am usually easy on components ::)
As the others said, it may be heavy enjoyment, or air in your hyd. line. Bleed, and re-check before pulling the right cover off.
