Clicking sound under seat - ABS? Why?

Completed valve adjustment, CCT, and clutch basket service/upgrades a week or so ago. I had previously posted that on my first test ride the clutch didn't engaged smoothly but was grabby the first two or three times I used it, but then resolved itself. I have attributed this to plates sticking after reassembly and moved on.

Yesterday, while doing a TB syns with my new DIY manometer I noted a clicking sound coming from under the seat when I turned the key on but before I started it. I understand this may be the ABS? It's still there following the sync with the vacumm line and cap reinstalled. Is this normal and I just never noticed it before? Or is this a sympton of something I should be checking?
Thanks in advance for you comments/ suggestions.

Only when you first turn the key on? The fuel pump primes the system for a few seconds when the key is first turned on.

No, not fuel pump. Sorry I wasn't clear. I hear it when the key is in the on position and it continues as long as I leave it in that position. I can't hear it once the bike is started but I'm assuming it's still there. Sounds just like a clock and definitively coming from under the seat.

So its definitely the ABS. From the service manual page 8-96 it says that the ABS performs a self diagnostic test when the main switch is set to the ON position and that a clicking noise will be heard from under the seat for a few seconds. So I guess mine just doesn't stop. The ABS light on the dash comes on when the key is turned to the ON position then goes after after about a second, which is normal.

Anyone have any experience with testing the ABS system and using the test coupler and test coupler adapter (whatever the hell that is)?? Can the ABS ECU codes be cleared without this test coupler adapter??

The ABS light should stay on until you get rolling to about 6 MPH at which point it will turn off if there are no detected issues.

Hmmm? Sorry but my understanding is that the ABS light is suppose to come on for about 1-2 seconds after main switch is turned on and then shuts off (like the others).

Nope, your understanding is not correct. From the service manual:

If yours is behaving differently, there may be something amiss.

Also need to clarify the year, '12-'13 work differently from the '14 and newer.

Jeff, I'm not sure if this is a difference between US and other models or model year but this is what my service manual says:

That's a picture of the '12-'13 dash. No, the ABS pump should not click.

Must be the difference. Mine is 2012 and I'm sure the light has always gone on for a couple of seconds when the key is turn on, and then the ABS light goes off.

Anyway, it would appear that the noise is the ABS self diagnosis test, but it never stops. Here's what the service manual says:

I stand corrected. Mine is a 2015. I also have a 2005 ST1300 with ABS and it works exactly the same way as my Ténéré. The light stays on until you ride off. I've seen the differences between the 1st & 2nd generation listed, but never heard they had changed the ABS system.

My '12 doesn't click and all the lights go off after approx. 2 seconds. The ABS worked properly the last time I needed it, no recent tests though. Try disconnecting the battery for ten minutes and see if it resets anything.

What was the last thing you did to the bike?

I imagine the engineers at Yamaha decided to have the ABS system self-diagnose when the bike starts rolling for the '14 on models, as per BMW.

That still has me stumped, the earlier system intruded so little on the rider experience, kind of a shame.

I wouldn't like to complicate matters but my '13 ABS light stays on until the bike starts rolling. This is exactly what the manual says. I believe it's the '12 models and earlier that worked differently.

It seems the ABS system would need to sense the wheel speed sensors to complete a thorough diagnostic.

Same here on my '13. Maybe different for Canada and/or U.K.?
