Great information in this thread. Here is a battery question. Last month, I purchased a new 2013 leftover S10. It was in a crate when I agreed to buy it and had to be assembled. What effect does sitting in a crate for up to two years have on the OEM battery? Is the OEM battery in the shipping crate with the bike? Or, does it come out of local dealer inventory?

Batteries are part of almost any shipped motor vehicle and AGM's can last a long time, but you can't make any bets on one that sat for 2 years in the bike. Even though resistance would be in the high megohms with one of the cables disconnected, there would have been a slow charge decay and no battery does well if allowed to fully discharge. So it may or may not have shortened the life, but if so then it'd be impossible to accurately put a number of months on it.

If it were mine, I'd ask the dealer to do a load test the next time the bike is in for service. Assuming you have warranty, if the battery dies soon you should be covered. If no warranty, I'd just run it till starting the bike gets slower and then figure it's part of why I got a great price.

Oh - and congrats on the new bike!

Thanks! I have the standard warranty but I do my own service. Given my history with Yamahas - this is my 10th - the dealer will never see this bike again. ::008::

Got rid of the American Batteries ($80.) unit and popped in a Yusas ($140.).

Slow cranking, rough idle & ABS all restored.

Strange how it effected the electronics. I swear it gave me more HP w/ the poor battery.

Better to have my ABS back, you don't realize how it helps w/ a hot handed operator.
