This is my first post on this forum, so hello everyone. I own an XVS650a (V-star or Dragstar in Europe) and have been riding it for the last 7 years. This bike is fantastic on open roads but is not that suitable for town riding or bumpy roads.

I have just ordered a 1300 Super Tenere (Matte Grey). This won't be delivered to me soon (April 2013) due to order book. It will be the only one in Malta (I live there) and this means that I have not had the opportunity of trying one before purchasing. I am expecting the seating position to be different but wonder how different it will be! I am not comfortable on a sports tourer, but the Super Tenere has an upright seating position and therefore I expect it to be OK. I am 6'1" so the higher seat position would be used.

I will continue following this forum and will surely post when the Super Tenere arrives.

Hello Juan, Greetings from Washington, D.C. and congratulations on your purchase. I believe you will be quite happy indeed.
I am 6' 1" as well and find the seating position just fine with the seat in the high position. Every so often I find myself leaning forward somewhat and that puts some pressure on the wrists. I believe that for my reach, I would like to move the handlebars a little aft. I also find that in very heavy, stop-and-go traffic the bike is a little bit of a handful as it does not like to go 6 mph all that much. It likes going faster.
I know it will be a long wait, but it will be worth it. The machine is pretty amazing. Very well thought out and I keep finding excuses to go riding. ::001::

Welcome, it's a great motorcycle! It is a little rough in the beginning and it really takes almost 6k miles to completely break in, getting smoother with every mile. Being over 6' you may have some wind buffeting issues. I would read up on those threads along with the seat mod and handlebar riser threads. Make sure you get us some pictures of her when she comes in. Welcome to the family.

Juan. Good move! I am 6 even and won't be changing anything with respect to the bars. Perfect. Will be getting a taller windshield, though.
The hardest thing for you will be waiting until April! It is going to be a looooonnnnng winter.

Hello from Oklahoma USA! I'm 6'2" and first things I added were the taller Yamaha Windshield (removed all helmet buffeting for me) and the ROX handle bar risers (took most of the pressue off of my wrists when sitting and standing). I will tell you it likes fast, but will go real slow if you want it to... It is a very comfortable bike and I came from the Royal Star Venture bike. I am actually more comfortable on the Super Tenere than I was on the RSV. I can ride it farther with no pain that I could my other bike. Good luck on your purchase. I think you will be pleasently surprised at the enjoyment you will get out of it.

Thanks to all for the warm welcome and the various advice. It appears that after the side cases the Yamaha windshield will probably have to be the next accessory. As Sam said, the hardest part is waiting till April :(

::004:: along Juan from Australia.

I know about the wait. YAMAHA actually started making this bike instead of keeping it an internet riumour and I had just bought something else.

Many people from the US had to do that too. You should go and read the thread on ADV Rider from a year or so ago. Some cranky pants over on that thread at the time :D

Welcome aboard...

Meself, I just shifted from an XVS650 to the Super Tenere last week. I'm 5'10" and can't put a foot flat on the ground when in the saddle, but that doesn't worry me much. The S10 is not too heavy to handle.
What I found amazing was how quickly I adapted from sitting two feet off the ground to nearly three and in an upright position. I doubt I'll ever buy another cruiser.

I know the area around Mosta and I reckon you're gonna have some serious fun scooting around the rocky bits....

Welcome on, Juan from Malta. I think I can say with all sincerity that you will not be disappointed. It is an elegant bike, both on and off road. You're gonna love it. April is a long ways off, but it will come. Hang in there, and please post some pics. ::004:: R. ::022::

I bought a Super Tenere without ever test riding one, relying on articles and the testimony from the many fine folks on this site. I was not disappointed.

My previous bike was also a Yamaha V-star 650. While i loved the v-star, it was not the most comfortable bike on longer rides. The Super Tenere is much better, although it is no touring bike. I like sitting upright better than the cruiser position. The best part of the ST is the off-road fun. I am sure what I consider hard off-road riding is pretty mild to some on this site, but I really enjoy the bike. Everything about it.

You might want to make drop bars part of your first modification. Good luck and safe riding!!

welcome to the forum. I hope there are some good roads to ride on your island. Do you get to the mainland much?

So Samps from Australia has been to Malta (practically half way round the globe) - obviously if you're around again, you must let me know.

To answer HoebDTer, yes I do go to mainland Europe, but not that often. I've been at least once a year for the last seven years, but only to southern Europe as the V-Star 650 is rather limited for long range cruising.

My ST finally arrived last Thursday. What a long wait - been waiting since last November. The Matte Grey is a fantastic colour, but I would need to treat it carefully. I'll be putting on side tank pads (the Yama accessory) to prevent rubbing. After a few miles I concluded that the ride was perfect - seat height good (I'm 6'1") and no buffetting at 70 mph. Now I noticed that the seat was in the lower position. Will now try it in the higher position, though that would mean no flat foot on the ground. And BTW, the sealed box was opened and the bike assembled (handle bar, controls, front wheel, wind shield, etc.) in my presence - this was on my insistance with the Yama dealer. I'm now waiting for the aluminium coloured side case which I've just ordered.

Excellent!!! What a long wait, but I'm sure you'll find it well worth it. Now you just have to wait a little more; for break-in to be complete, for parts to arrive, for good weather, for more money for more farkles, ... you get it ::025::
