Howdy Folks ,
Has anyone else purchased these carabou Luggage cases ? They are Pelican Panniers ( cases ). The company says if for any reason you should damage these cases they will replace them free , you just pay the shipping. That sounds like a good deal to me ?? I also like the looks of these panniers. http://cariboucases.com/store/?name=Catalog&mode=i&item=000358
I wrote to the company asking about prices. I asked them: " I was just on your website looking to your 35 Liter Pelican Luggage Panniers for the 2012 Yamaha Super Tenere at a price of $798.00 , is that the price for a pair ( left and right side ) or each ?" . Here is the reply I got from Carabou Luggage.

Hi John,

That price is for the complete system (cases, side luggage racks, mounts, all hardware and locks). It is a great value.

Please let me know if you have any other questions. Thank you.

Thanks Waiting ,
I think I'm going to go with the Carabou luggage system to , it will fit my needs perfectly. I'm also going to buy a Corbin backrest for my wife. She won't ride on a bike with no backrest , so I gotta get one for her.

We have them on my son's BigStrom & they are indeed rugged. They are not IMHO good looking and seem to be an expensive way to add a lock.

Personally, I think there are better values, in giving more volume, looking better, and at less cost. Examples would be MuffinTop, Happy Trails, etc.

I had them on my KLR and they were rock solid. Had to remember to swing my leg out a little farther or get bumped :) but never got dinged up real hard.

I found them pretty convenient to take off and hike with. One of the key-locks was a bit tight to turn, but all else was as advertised. I can also compliment the fellow who put them together for me in Boulder as he gave first rate customer service (I was 'local' so went to see him a couple of times.)

We don't , not sure if we'll buy the seats. Just need a backrest.
About the Top Case you have. On my 2012 yamaha Super Tenere it says no to exceed 11 pounds on the rear luggage rack. I just contacted Carabou Luggage and asked about the weight and mounting system on the 25 L . Pelican top cases and Roger at Carabou Luggage told me they are 12 pounds , so that already exceeds the weight limit without putting anything in them .

I guess as far as looks go , beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder. Everyone's taste in gear is different. I like the rugged look of them and I don't like to carry a lot of stuff with me , so they would fit my needs. The factory cases were more expensive than the Carabou and don't come with a warranty , Carabou says if you should ever damage their Pelican cases they will replace them free of charge , all you have to do is pay the shipping , so I really like that.
But I will check out the other cases mentioned.

It's really a lawyer thing....they are covering their asses.
The new racks will bolt directly to the frame
Check the owners man. And it will give you
Allowed total loads

I deliberated for a month before trying Hepco Becker Juniors: http://www.yamahasupertenere.com/index.php?topic=5535.0 I decided they were not tough enough for the abuse I plan, and were also too small. Finally, I bought a Caribou set, which I really knew was the correct choice all along.

They're not as pretty as some, but very tough and very functional. Their weight is equal to or lower than many alternatives. The extras that Caribou supplies for the Pelican set are worth the extra $. Finally, Roger is a good guy to deal with, and is also a supporter of the 2013 Colorado Rally!

Just do it. You won't regret it.

I contacted Carabou Luggage yesterday and spoke with Roger. I asked him about the 25L top case and the weight issue and he replied. Roger has been great in answering every question I've had. I have decided I'm going to go with the Carabou Luggage system for my YST.
Here's what Roger said regarding the weight issue for the top cases:

Hi John,

Our kit comes with steel tail rack braces. You’ll be fine.

Thank you so much for sharing that Jagermeister ,
I'm gonna do it. Not right now though , in the spring. Right now I just got the bike and it's almost winter , so I won't be using it much. So I'll wait until spring and then order them. There are also many accessories I want to install like the Skid plate , crash bars etc. etc. ...... I'm also thinking that when these tires wear out I will go with a tire that is make for 70% road / 30% dirt ??
I can tell I'm going to have a lot of fun with this bike , I live in the perfect place for a Dual Sport.
Thanks again.

This may be true... and bless him for it ::008::. BUT I cant afford to have people do what I can easily do myself with a drill, a home depot and a saturday. just sayin.... ;). There is a lot of great info on this site on this sort of stuff and I appreciate all of it. Its just that some people dont realize they can save SOOO much money if they just put a little effort in.

I dont mean to take business away from anyone or undermind anyone's business... Just speaking out for those who have to macguyver the little things in order to afford the important things.

I think it's great that you have found a way to save money, it's admirable. However I doubt if you can McGyver a latching system that compares to the Caribou system, but without question, Roger's system is solid, rattle/squeak-free, and quick and easy to operate.

I'm not a Richie Rich, but when I see a system so well thought out, it becomes one of the important things I'm willing to sacrifice for.

I've seen all of the systems and luggage, my choice will always be Caribou cases. Roger has nothing to fear with honest competition.

I bought my S10 slightly used. It came with the Pelican bags, but it was the Twisted Throttle version. So far I really like the bags. They use the SWMoto mounts with their own mounting kit.

I will probably call Caribou, as I like some of the "accessories" that they have for these bags. I believe they both use the same case. Just a different mounting system. And if I ever get into really deep water, I can use the bags to provide approximately 90lbs of floatation support!
