Can we get over Mt. Rainier beginning of May?

Hey,

A bunch of us are putting a ride together May 5th to 12th from the Pacific North West (Vancouver, BC area) and were wondering if we're wasting our time thinking we can get up and over Rainier during that week (Hwy 706 west to east). The road reports say they are clearing snow, but what are the conditions like after they do that? Does WSDOT poor salt/gravel/rocks/sand to their roads like we do in BC? ::010::

Just looking for a little local knowledge before we put too much time into planning a no-go. ::005::

I believe they typically aim to open this road around Memorial Day if they can and this year the snow is pretty high. I'd make other plans.
