Can the auxiliary socket be used to plug in a battery conditioner?

I think so.
it's a very small fuse (3amp).
why not use the provided pig tails c/w fuse, and wire directly in? it can also double as a plug in for a compressor with a beefier fuse (10amp)

You might get away with it, but why risk it? Like Greg suggested, install the pigtail and you will know it's good and won't blow the fuse.

I installed an I switched powerlet port on the opposite side of the dash for the Optimate III. Works great.

The factory socket is switched, so I don't think a battery conditioner will get anywhere.

When I first got the bike I wired an SAE plug straight to the battery. http://batterytender.com/products/accessories/ring-terminal-harness.html Cheap and easy.

For my heated gear and various other items I use Powerlet sockets on all my bikes. I ordered one and put on on the Tenere here...

It works and looks great, although a bit tight at full lock on the handlebars if you aren't using a right angle plug. Not an issue for what I use it for. I prefer the outlet to be unswitched, so I went straight to the battery. Having the battery right there makes this stuff super easy. Once the powerlet was in I removed the SAE plug as I use the powerlet stuff for heated gear, compressor, charging, etc.
