Being as how I cannot afford the Colorado meet, I'm planning a camp-n-ride based at R. D. Bailey Lake Campground in mid-June (nice Army Corps of Engineers facility; more info http://www.rei.com/guidepost/detail/west-virginia/campgrounds/r-d-bailey-lake-campground/19732).

The area is in the bowels of the southern WV coalfields and I've only ridden the main roads in this area; but there are about a million miles of backways and dirt roads right out of the campground to easily get lost upon...uh...er...to explore. The riding will be top notch and if you've never been to the northernmost reaches of the Cumberland Mountains, you will be in for a cultural experience like few others. ;D

Everyone is more welcome to join in if so inclined.

Representative terrain. Please note the extent of nothingness:

I can't plan too well that far in advance because of work, but would be up for some "pre-running" and route testing before then!

My work calendar is pretty full until then. But maybe we can put together a weekend (outside of spring gobbler season of course!) when the weather clears some and things dry up a bit. Soft as a baby's bottom right now. We'll work on it.

Just spotted your bump here, Jim. Still planning the ride?
You betcha! ::008:: Come join in Jon.

Adventure into an unknown area...to me at least. Just south by southeast of your old haunts in Logan.

I might just join you. It's the camping part I'm struggling with. Just did that earlier this month and setting up a tent two months in a row may cause me to have Army flashbacks from the '80s. Nooooo!

Jim, did you end up changing the venue for this?
Nope, didn't hear from you so it remains R. D. Bailey Lake. Weather is forecast to play nicely. If you listen closely, the north west loop and the trail down the southwest length of Blair Mtn is calling your name!!! Come join us

I've plotted a loop where the adv crew (3 so far) will ride to Blair with the FJR crew (2), we will seperate and ride thru the mtns while they continue the loop on the highway and we meet up later for afternoon tea then ride backroads to close the loop to camp.

Made it home about 4:00 today.

Thanks for your usual outstanding hospitality, Jim. It was good to see you again and and to meet everyone.

I took a very quick look at the video and pulled out a few shots. I'll probably do some type of ride report thread in a few days. But until then here are a couple of stills from the video.

And of course..."the water crossing."

I think the water crossing alone is worth of a thread all by itself. ::013::

Good stuff.

Thanks again.

We had a blast didn't we !! Good riding and tire kicking and excellent company. Another run soon just may be in order (sans the water perhaps ;D ). Keeping an eye out for that ride report.

I too got home about 4:00, just ahead of the rain. I spent the day on wickedly twisted mountain buffalo trails that flirt back and forth across the WV/VA border and could have spit into KY a time or two. Interacted with a few unique locals and saw some rare sights indeed.

Nice looking roads there.

I also managed to stay between rain drops. Only had extremely light sprinkles for the last 10 minutes. Doesn't get much better than that.
