I'm sure everybody has already seen this somewhere, it's pretty big news. As a PSU alum, I definitely feel saddened by his passing. The recent scandal events have obviously brought into question some of his image and integrity, but for today I'm just remembering the good things about him.
I met him once in person, very briefly. My roommate and I were riding our mountain bikes on some dirt trails at PSU. My roommate was in front of me, and we popped out off the dirt onto one of the paved paths that are around PSU. My roommate was waiting, and as I pulled up aside him he just pointed further up the trail and says, "JOE!" Low and behind, about 50 yards up you could see a guy walking away from us, and even at that distance he was unmistakeable. We rode slowly up aside of him and wished him luck on the game the next day. He thanked us kindly in a very sincere tone of voice and we rode off. The next day we lost. I only met him for a few moments, but I could tell right there that he was the man everybody said he was, very sincere and down to earth.
God speed Joe!
