G'day all
looking to visit the us in April next year ,I own A 13 s10 and now THIS is the bike I want to tour. on but looking at craiglist and other bike sites there's not much for sale plus my biggest concern is selling after my trip if I drop 10k on a bike.
I've seen lots of good bikes at <>5kusd(FJR 1300 triumph tiger/sprint (BMW)vstrom 650/1000 ) that would do but not the do it all tenere that I like.
I'm going to pursue the bike I want but may end up with something else suggestions ?
cheers Marty ::003::

Lots of Tigers!!
But then when it comes time to resell it will get caught up in the herd and now your waiting like the rest of the sellers..
I owned the 1050 Tiger great highway runner hard pack was fine. test road the 800 and 1200 for an hour or two loved them as well, 1200 felt top heavy but gobs of endless power.
The 800 i liked didn't like the seat felt to short for my big A$$. ::025::

Both like all the 1050 and up models have that far away feel to the dash board.

looking on craiglist Saw a triumph sprint 06 6400m for 4300usd , for that kind of money I would be happy to sell for half after my trip, not so much for a 10k tenere,thanks for the input ::003::
cheers marty

It would help a LOT to know more about what you want to do on your trip.
Where are you arriving and departing from? What kind of speeds and roads are you looking for? Rough idea of States to visit? A pack mule with camping gear, or a traveling light between hotels with a credit card?

I was into the Sprint as well but I find it to sporty of a position, your more slumped forward on the bars than say sitting up for long distance comfort..

Checkswrecks does have the question of the day I would like to know this as well, the Sprint will be sort of squirrely on dirt roads.
I personally would look for a Tiger 1050 08 and up as i owned one for a spell 45+k miles and it can do dirt and even some gravel roads and it just shines on the interstate, and it won't kill your back..
And yes it can handle a load of stuff with power..

Re: buying a tenere in the USA

G'day, thanks for the replies, specially about the triumph 1050 on dirt.
Ok then , 6 months mainly self sufficient camping so back roads , exploring national parks maybe a bit of
fishing , anything interesting off the main tourist trail.
Landing in LA or Albuquerque for ease of transferring rego ?
No real plan as such just make my way north for summer as far as Canada then back south to leave in September.
Will be fully loaded and solo . have a s10 and a dr650 here in oz and honestly I've not ridden the dr since I got the
tenere .

I will be doing a lot of miles on sealed roads that's why I'm considering a cheep sports tourer.
Really looking for a second hand bike that's already setup , my buget for every think after i land is 30k so max
for a bike is 10k , but I'm worried about selling after 40k miles ;D I know I'll take a hit financially but hay its only money
hope to attend some rallies and meet some people off here and avd
cheers Marty ::001::

PJ's Triumph Ducati in Albuquerque has this>> http://albuquerque.craigslist.org/mcd/4751289497.html

You have cash i know you could work a deal and they are like 15 miles away from the Albuquerque airport.

Then you have this north of LA Tenere 2013>> http://losangeles.craigslist.org/ant/mcd/4792025144.html

http://www.wheelsinmotionmc.com/default.asp?page=xNewInventoryDetail&id=973132&p=6&s=Year&d=D&t=new&fr=xNewInventory

If you show up in Albuquerque New Mexico lets hook up, I can show you some nice rides and rivers to fish in..

G'day Ramseybella
Thanks for the links ::008::
Seen a couple of new tenere's in that price range(but how much out the door?)
Local knowledge of roads and bike shops is what I'm looking for thanks for the offer.

Hey Boots,

You're doing the reverse-duplicate of what I and my wife did a couple of years ago. We traveled to OZ and "rented" a Tenere in Melbourne, then traversed the southern half of your HUGE island. It was amazing!

Good luck with your plans and adventure.

As noted above, you'll need to shop around. A 1050 Tiger is a good scoot (had a nice 07 'till I bought my '13 S10 last June). You should also consider a WeeStrom. Darn good bike, been around for years and pretty reasonable even when new. Start looking on Cycle Trader for the LA or New Mexico areas. Good luck, safe travels and keep us posted on your progress. I'm sure one of our guys would be willing to step up & check out anything you find.

The more I think about it, if you're only compromising on getting a bike other than a Super Tenere, because of economics, I might have an option that puts the Tenere back on the table.
First, it appears that you are more than realistic enough about the potential "loss" on resale. Second, you have a generous vacation budget, from what you have stated. And finally, since you already know what touring on a Tenere is like, there should be no unexpected let down that, on the other hand, another bike model might surprise you with.

So, if you did shop around and find a low-moderate mileage Super Tenere to your liking, for a great price, I might be willing to be a guaranteed purchaser, at the end of your stateside adventure.

These Beasts have proven their robustness to me. So even if you 2 put one through a world class pack mule jaunt, I'd have no fear freshening it up and putting it back in service. It'd be nice to have a second ST for one of my dirtbiking brothers to jump on and go on an adventure with me.

So if you really can budget a big hit on resale because of your unique opportunity, I'm betting you can get a predictable outcome. Soak on it there mate!

Cheers
Bruce

Did a 199 day ride in US this year. Check blog at www.wwr2014 for some great places to visit while here. Ride covered 33000 miles.

Re: buying a tenere in the USA

G'day Bruce ( snakebitten )
Glad to hear you had good time in Oz ::008::
I'm prepared to lose money on the resale of a bike that I put 30/40k miles in 6 months, just don't want to be
leaving the country with a more expensive bike not sold ! A cheaper bike 4/5/k sealing at 50% of what I payed
might be easer to sell, maybe :question:
On the question of wee strom had one for 90k/kms a great bike but not as good as a tenere ::025::
I think I'll just have to suck it and see and have a look at what bike are for sale in march.
Thanks for the input and suggestions very interesting
cheers Marty ::003::

My pleasure Marty.

Come time to pull the trigger, and there's a Tenere that you like, just get in touch and see if we can come to an arrangement.
Too bad we don't have a great bikes-for-hire like they have in Melbourne. They had EVERY kind of bike. All makes and models.

Not cheap, of course. But it was a piece of cake to get the same bike the missus was already used to riding. Fully rigged with pannier and top box too.
Had an amazing ride run on it. Nice folks running the place too.

Boots, the resale of all Triumphs in the US is piss poor. I've owned a bunch. I still own a "13 Explorer that I will not sell because the resale is so bad. Also not the bike you want to take off road. Tiger 1050 WAS a nice enough bike in it's day but a lot has changed since then. After your S10 you will find it disappointing in every regard. I've tried it. Buy yourself a used S10 at a fair price and sell it for less after the trip. Really pays to be on a bike you like.

A friend has a 2006 FJR with about 90k miles for sale for $4000. Pretty sure he would store it till you got here, if not I would. Nice ride, well maintained, easy sell when you are done with it. Deal and a half. Probably be more money in the spring.

Minnesota can be sketchy in April, but we are not far from the western states loaded with killer rides. His add is down off Craigs List (winter here now) but he has pics. He bought a 14 this fall.

PM if interested, Minnesota is smack in the middle of the US, not the best jumping off point but that bike is a deal and we are one day ride away (if you're a hard ass) from some of the best riding in the US.

Let me know if I can help.

Wow, Snakebitten's made a heck of an offer and reason to come in through Dallas!
Watch Craigslist for LA and Dallas.

If you want to save money, I'd suggest a DL1000 Vstrom over the Triumph, because there are so few Triumph dealers and it's hard to beat the prices on used Stroms.
