Kind of scratching my head here looking for suggestions-

I live in Washington State. I bought my ST in Texas. The dealer in TX tells me I have to be there in person to sign paperwork for the bike. He explained they can't ship into another dealers area(once I sign the paperwork in person then they can arrange for shipping if that's what I want to do.). I'm not sure I can take time off work in August to do this. This dealer has a good reputation and I'm looking for options here-not trying to start a shit storm. I haven't heard of this situation before and if anyone has dealt with something like this I'd like to know how they handled it.

Thanks

Pete

Which dealer? Yamaha Sportscenter?

I am picking my blue S10 up there... happy to pick yours up as well and deliver it in exchange for whatever gas it needs and a ticket back to get mine. :D

You could also try www.uship.com to look for alternative shipping quotes. I was one of the drivers on the site for a fair bit, same screen name - sail2xxs

Pete I wonder if you could do a specific POA (Power of Attorney) with a local member on this forum close to the dealer and let them sign for the bike then you have it shipped to your house? If you had the POA worded that the person only has authority to sign for the bike and nothing else you should be fine but I would ask the dealer if this is feasible and allowed and contact a lawyer. You may also have to check into TX law versus your state with this sort of thing.

From what I understand it has to do with the 'Yamaha dealer' contract. Ive seen it over the years at many dealers... Its been black & white as far as I know. If H&S forces you to pick up at there "show room"... then its a done deal... Ya gotta be their.. :D

Are not fax documents, signed and notarized, legal documents?

But if you absolutely have to be there, turn in into an adventure.

Can't you fedex papers back and forth?

I'm also from WA. If you're buying from Tony in Longview, I plan on being there to get mine sometime late-summer/early-fall, and I'd be happy to assist in any way I can.

I bought a new bike out of state and had to go there to sign paperwork for the loan. If I was paying cash they would have shipped it to me, but since I was using their financing I had to take the time to go pick it up half-way across the country. Getting a personal loan at a local bank and sending them a check would get you out of it and they should be able to ship you the bike (Forward Air, etc.).

Many lawyers will give a fee consult. You may want to call one in the same city as the bike and ask if it can be done. If it can, make arrangements with the lawyer to sign for the bike and make sure the shipping is done. Might work, but may add another 500.00 to the price.

I will ask my dealer and see what he says.

Pete,

The problems lies with the way Yamaha has written the dealer agreement. They are really starting to crack down on "bootlegging" into another dealers area. Our dealer agreement says the customer must take delivery at the approved dealer location.

There are some dealers that will and have shipped a bike without the customer present, but the risk associated with doing that is simply not worth it. Even if we were getting MSRP for the bikes, I would not risk losing my franchise for the sake of selling a unit.

If you decide you don't want your bike, I will cheerfully refund the deposit from my store and pass the bike along to one of the people we have on a waiting list.

That is my only option.

I am truly sorry if it doesn't work out for you.

Regards,

Tony

Couldn't you fly down on the weekend, sign the papers then ask Tony to store it, put it on the floor. What's a storage unit cost per month? Anyway, fly back down whe you have time and ride it back up to the Evergreen state.

Tony is a flexible guy - if you're still wanting to do the fly/buy/ride type of deal (which I heartily recommend - I've done it three times now and each time it was glorious fun), surely he'll be willing to work with you to find an acceptable time for the pickup. Personally speaking, I certainly won't be able to fly down on a moment's notice when the bike shows up and to be honest, I have little interest in taking delivery of a bike in the deep S in Aug anyway. My plan is to let Tony bump me down his list as necessary to sometime in Sept, but we'll have to see how it all works out - I hate to be a doubter, but I've been in this situation with vehicle mfgs many times, and my experiences have made me skeptical that Yamaha is going to deliver all the bikes in Aug anyway.

Tony,

I appreciate the reply. I've waited this long for the bike and when you folks get a confirmed date of arrival, I'll start the ball rolling on my end trying to get some time off. I've emailed you folks directly before and found out you'd work with me. I just asked the question on the forum to see if there was other options(sure would like to break the ST in this year!! ;D) You folks have been great and I know we'll work out the details when the bike arrives. Thanks again!!

Pete

Pete,

Your welcome! If you need us to keep the bike for a while that is not a problem either. We can work out whatever arrangements you need, just let us know. ;D

We look forward to seeing all of our customers in the next few months.

One question, why in the world would you buy one so far from home? If it is simply price I believe that you might have negotiated a deal with a local dealer. I know I would rather make something rather than nothing selling something. Even if you offered to pay the closer dealer a couple of hundred dollars more you would be money ahead. Just thinking out loud.

I've done "fly and rides" a couple times. It isn't always about the money as it is also an adventure. Yeah, you have to look at the final cost of the travel and weigh that against what you might pay for the item locally. Plus there is the value of dealing with a local dealer and the relationship that builds.

Heck, I once drove clear to the east coast and once to the west coast to pick up a used bike (trailered it home) - but in each case I made it into a mini-vacation.

The difference in cost between your local dealer's best offer and the better long-distance offers can be quite significant. In my area, on a new model of bike, it's strictly MSRP+F/S on a new/ordered model. And I can usually finance the flight using freq flyer miles. So the economics can be favorable.

But that's not the main attraction for me. The attraction is the chance to do a one-way, long-distance trip in which all you do for a week or more is get to know one's new motorcycle. The S10 is a touring bike and I am going to want to take a long tour very soon after I buy it anyway. Why not do this tour picking the bike up?
