Buying a second Tenere

I bought a Supere Tenere about three months ago. Love it so much that I am going to buy a second one, since I spend quite a lot of time about 400 miles north. Figure I can put it up there, and leave it there for when I want to ride it. It's not practical for me to ride the one that I have back and forth, because I am a pilot, and fly up to the other location.

Debating between another 2013 and a 2014. Can get the 2013 for $12,000 out the door. :D
What's better than owning a S10? Owning two of them. :))

That is a good price.

I have 1 Tenere and 1 KLR and I know which one I am going to ride each time I go to ride. You may have a problem with two of them? :)

What colors will be North and South? :)

I kinda get his point. I was treated to a couple of weeks, all expenses paid, trip to Australia. I found myself standing in this amazing "Bike for hire" business in Melbourne. I was shocked at the available hardware for rent. All brands. All models. Stuffed wall to wall.
Ended up riding the same exact Super Tenere I had at home. Down to the color.

I made the right choice. It was a fantastic adventure. My favorite (and only) pillion companion agrees.

You're a loyal dude, Snake. If you won't even cheat on your motorcycle in that situation then clearly your favorite pillion has nothing to worry about! O:)

Good question. It's difficult to buy (for example) a used 2011 GS with 30,000 miles on it, for the same price that I would buy a NEW S10 with a five year YES warranty.

I have owned BMW's in the past, and the maintenance costs are significantly higher on them than the Super Tenere. So I'd have a used 30k mile bike, out of warranty, that costs more to own than a new bike.

I'd enjoy riding a GS, but just not sure that I'd enjoy the ownership experience.

Am I missing the boat here?

Suit yourself, but with motorcycles, there is no law against polygamy. I'd get something that offers a change of pace.

That's what I do; although my second bike isn't another Tenere, but it's nice to have a second bike at your remote location.

Hmmm, I dunno, what MSRP are the 2014's meant to be coming out at there in the US of A? Would you look at the standard 2014 or the ES model? If the ES is not your thing then I think the choice between a standard 2013 vz a vz 2014, would see me go for a 2013 if the out the door price is a substantial difference. If however on the other hand you want a slightly different experience but be faithful to the model then the ES would seem to perhaps fill that criteria without having to compromise etc...
So depending on wants, needs versus pricing differential would be my criteria for making a determination on whether to buy the 'great' deal now or wait it out...
YMMV

@ SPX,

YOUR logic is sound. If you have the same variety of surfaces 400 miles away as you do at home, and you like riding all of them equally, then it makes perfect sense to have the same bike for both areas.
In a lot of cases however, since an Adventure bike is a compromise anyway, some riders would like a more appropriate weapon when they get to their favorite surface, which in many cases is what they travel great distances to do. If that is not your reason for riding 400 miles from home, then a second identical bike makes the most sense.

P.S. And stay with the same year, or else, one will become your favorite. Just sayin'... :)

Your point isn't hard to get at all for me. At the moment I have two, one for sale. We're planning on moving and I'd considered leaving one here at my brother's place so the pleasure could be had whenever, wherever. Motomogamist from here on in. Congrats to you SPX!

An interesting predicament. Me personally, I would get something different. Don't get me wrong. I love my S10 and would not give it up. But if I was buying a second bike I would change it up a little. Not sure what that other bike would be but it would be something with an entirely different riding experience. I'd have to give it some long, hard thought. Who knows? Maybe after all is said and done I WOULD end up buying a second S10. If that were the case though, I think it would be a 2014, just to see how the new ones have improved.

Not a bad problem to have though having to make the decision. I envy you. And whatever choice you make will be the right one.

I know a guy over here that has an XT1200Z and an XT660, he says they compliment each other quite well.

Unfortunately, the XT660 is not available in North America at this time. Personally, I think the decision to have two Super Tens in two different locations is a great idea.

Just to be all logic nit-picky here - it's not a second bike a remote location, it's the only bike at the remote location. If the Tenere best suits his riding requirements at the primary site, and if he has the same riding requirements at the secondary site, then another Tenere in the fleet is the right decision. The good price lends favor to that argument as well. Also, nothing wears Tenere hand-me-downs better than another Tenere. There is a little something to be said for the efficiencies of commonality.
