Buying a 2016 ES with 72k miles

The bike has been well taken care of and had major maintenance done ~7k miles ago. Valves, fork seals, etc. I test rode it and everything checks out from what I can tell. Brakes are in good shape, front tire will need to be replaced sometime next riding season, and everything works as it should based on what I checked. Any things I should be looking out for aside from the obvious? I’m picking it up in a couple weeks and want to be as prepared as possible. My first bike was a 2011 ninja 250 and my current bike is a 2018 Z650 with 21k miles that I’m selling to a friend tomorrow to make room for the ST. This will be my first adventure style bike and I’m hoping to take it on many long trips and for it to last me for years to come. Based on what I’ve read from others’ experience, that should be no problem.

My opinion……I’d change all the fluids so that I know all are fresh and have established a starting point. Yamalube and OEM filter is fine. When/if doing the brake fluid, cycle the ABS pump. Change the diff fluid ensuring fully synthetic is used. I’d also eye the calipers and decide if they need a thorough clean or not. If plugs and air filter are not on a recent receipt, I’d do those as well. Perhaps on this mileage consider a new CCT in the not to distant future.

Above all though, I wouldn’t stress over the mileage, they’re a good, dependable bike, capable of big miles. Enjoy it!

like boris said, i,d do a fluid change and go ride 72k is nothing to worry about if its been well maintained

Welcome from Northern Illinois. Fluids about the only thing to check as said above. Well, I'd put it on the centerstand and make sure the front wheel is off the ground. Then with a finger or two slowly pull the handlebars from lock position to lock position both ways. Check to see if you feel a notch or it will catch slightly. You'll feel it. Mostly this will happen when the bars are straight as that is where it has spent most of its life. If you feel it then head bearings are in your near future. Also with the front wheel off the ground grip the lower forks and try to shake backwards and forwards. If there is movement that's another way to tell if the head bearings are needing replacement.

Thanks for your guys’ input! I’ll make sure to put fresh fluid in it and will be looking into getting the cam chain tensioner replaced in the near future.
As far as the head bearing go, I think those were replaced during the most recent maintenance but I’m double check the record and be sure to do a test if not.

Appreciate the greeting, Sierra! I see you all over the forums lol I really like the community here and looking forward to bringing the super ten home. My friend picked up my Z650 today and I’m about 2 weeks from bringing the new pony home.
