Busted Crankcase!

Recent Moab trip on the White Rim Trail sees me with a holed bottom crank case cover. Had the SWMotech Skid Plate mounted but after a few hits my Low Oil Lite came on. Luckily I saw it right away and shut her down. My buddies had Liquid Steel and bummed 2 quarts of oil from some Jeep guys and we were on the way again. Only 60 more miles to go. Have read on here somewhere that the Yamaha design bottom crankcase and SWMotech mounting bracket to that poor design could result in poking a hole in the case. Anyway, I haven't checked yet but, how readily available are these bottom crankcase covers and what is the cost? Oh yea, and what can I expect to encounter pulling off this cover. Will anything fall out etc? Anybody else out there have this problem? Thanks for any anwsers!

I'm not clear.

Are you saying the SW Motech skidplate took a hit and then some component of the skidplate holed the case?

Or that a rock or whatever was not deflected by the skidplate and holed the case?

weak!
You ride that thing like you stole it.

Bring it by when you have all the parts, we'll put it on the lift for easy access. should be straight forward

Hey burnoil. The crankcase cover I'm talking about is the the one on the bottom of the engine under the skid plate. The way it is designed, there is this knob protrusion hanging down from the crankcase which is threaded which the SWMotech skid plate bracket attaches to. So any hard hit is going to push the skid plate up punching this protrusion through the crankcase. I'm not the first person this has happened to. :))

Thanks. Got the last one out there. Strainer Cover and Gasket. May try patching the original from the inside. It is now leaking slightly from the outside. Just have to removing it and see if anything falls out that shouldn't. This Site is full of useful info. Thanks again.

Instead of patching it, you may want to have it welded. I seem to remember another inmate had his welded and it worked great. Just a thought.

Depending on the damage to the sump cover you might be able to have it welded and machined. That's what I did for mine when I cracked it.

I put the welded part back on, but bought a new part and took it with me last year on my trip to Canada and Alaska. The weld part is still in place and working just fine.
I now have nearly 20K miles in the bike since the repair. The new part is still on the shelf.

Was it Jaime that chopped off that stud and found it was hollow? Actually, it sounds like a good thing to do, chop that thing off of there and weld it closed, new part or old.

Yes, the Altrider skid plate attaches to the same point. This is why I started importing Rumbux. No attachments to the sump cover, only to the frame.

If you're riding at that level, it may be time to upgrade your protection level. ACD, Ride On ADV or Rumbux, each has positive and negative aspects. Nothing else out there that does NOT bolt to the sump. I do have some un-sold 3-Part kits, (Lower bash frame, skid plate, upper crash bars), coming in late May...

Do you mean this part. ::020::

Removing the pan is preety simple. With no surprises. Had it welded. Mine didn't break. I decided to cut it off and found it to be hollow.

Bytheway I have an Alt-Rider plate that I mount directly to my Yamaha cross bar, not to the engine. And I needed to get this protrusion off so it didn't happen out some where.

It looks like if you cut it say 5mm shorter you would miss the hollowed out part and still have a few mm of material covering the void? But the worst of the nub would be gone.

 Second photo above, the hollow cut off protrusion. AltRider does mount to that.

All skid plates for the Super Ten, except ACD, Ride On ADV or Rumbux are crap. They all mount to the sump, which is cast aluminum and will fracture, not bend, when an impact occurs, even if that impact is not severe enough to damage the actual skid plate.

Am I biased? You bet. That's why I worked my butt off to get a skid plate system for my Super Ten that did not mount to the sump. And why I started a company to import them, because at the time, nothing else was available in the US that didn't mount to the sump.

Choose wisely, or walk home. ::003::
