So I'm 1300 miles from home on the s10, headed back home Friday. Ive started smelling burning oil on my short commute from hotel to office I'm working in. Can't find an obvious source. Forks are good, only see a slight wetting around the left side of the valve cover. Not sure if that's the source of the smell but see nothing else. Any ideas?

First check your oil filter. You could have picked up debris. The only simple thing I can think of is the airbox has a oil/moisture capture tube on the left side. They are usually full when they arrive in the US. If the tube was missing the oil could drip on the engine.

Sometimes the crap we pick up on the road can be flung into the headers. If it was Tar, it could be your problem. Just an idea, specially if it was raining.

It was raining yesterday when it started. I thought it ws from the car I was following, but it persisted this morning in the dry .

Jeff is probably right especially with the water being able to lift oil off the road and onto your engine/exhaust.

Thanks, I've looked it over and don't see anything unusual. I'm keeping an eye on it, with 1300 miles over next few days ill found out quick if anything is wrong. Probably just picked up road junk yesterday in the rain as suggested.

Made it home with no further oil smell or issue. Must have been some road crap that burned off for a day or two.

I always get the funky oil smells after riding in the rain. Like clockwork, when I pull into the garage with my visor up, there it is. Its road debris and road oils slung up from the wet pavement.

I'd like to suggest the Pyramid Fenda Extenda to keep stuff off the header pipes. 8)
They work well depending on your bash plate. Some have been known to get caught in the bash plate go rippy poo ::007::
