Sadly on Tuesday evening I got my left knee down - by falling down the steps to my bungalow (yes, the irony a bungalow with steps...) ! I knew I'd given it a fair old clatter at the time and sat with it elevated and iced for the rest of the evening. I thought it may have been a bit better yesterday but it was about the same (unable to walk on it, only hobble). I got up today and it's much worse so I've had to call the Doc' out for a look. The bad news is I'm not riding my bike for a while, the good news is I'll not know what's going on looking at the med's she wants me to take !!! It looks like I've damaged two of the interior ligaments and have probably chomped a bit of cartilage off too. Bugger. I have a Euro tour with Littledave booked up starting on the 19th of June so fingers crossed I'm OK for then. After 49 years you'd have thought I'd have the hang of walking down steps ?

Bummer! Could be worse...I've had four separate knee surgeries on my right knee. Doesnt include 1/2 doz times I've strained the right knee causing swelling and weeks of crutches and limping. Last incident with right knee again tore ACL, partial tear of PCL, meniscus tear...DR says knee replacement is only solution. One I'm not willing to commit to at this point. I'll deal with the limitations and daily pain. Left knee...never even a minor strain in 51yrs.

Chuck, I can tell you without hesitation, that "when" you decide to have your knee replaced, you will be really pissed that you didn't do it sooner. I know four people, as well as myself, that have full knee replacements, and other than the usual 3 or 4 days of pain after surgery, the recovery is faster than any other knee surgery except minor orthroscopy. Everyone, including myself, regrets putting it off as long as we did. Mine was due more to soft tissue damage (like yours) than the usual worn out cartilage, so I was more on the fence to the benefit of replacement, but it was the best thing I ever did. I had 2 reconstructive surgeries previous to replacement, which were way more painful, and rehab took much longer.
Hope this helps you get off your ass and get it done! LOL
Scott

P.S. I had just turned 50 when mine was done, and that was 12 years ago.

Hey Bry, sorry to read the news! I hope you are well soon and a speedy recovery, would be a shame not to meet up with you and Little Dave in June.

It'll take a bit to keep me away from Europe in June - I'll be there one way or another ::008::

My better half is medical and has been pushing me this year to get something done. I've had to break out the morphine a few times this year with the pain. My sister is also medical and stated the last 2-3yrs have seen HUGE improvements in knee replacement outcomes. However, she also stated there are clinical trials going on now where they are growing new tissues and inserting them into the knee. They have seen excellent results in pigs (same knee design) and human results are coming in now showing very promising. She estimated additional 2yrs and this would be common practice if all continues to go well. I just can't get past what has to be removed for knee replacement...its pretty permanent.

The Mrs new knee has had threaded inserts placed into the bone, if the replacement needs a replacement then it should 'simply' unscrew and a new one can be fitted. The titanium one she has fitted is estimated to last 25 years, although it could go on longer, some of the early replacement knees were only good for 10 years.

P.S. the Mrs has suggested I get stabiliser's fitted...

My friends sister has had something done like this from a doctor in Philadelphia.
Using your stem cells and sending it out to a different country I think it was down in the Caribbean to process it
(not FDA Approved as of yet).
It then gets injected into your knee and starts to grow new tissue as you lay around for two to three weeks on the beach.
His sister says it is working well so far!!
I did a stupid thing and watched a Knee replacement performed on Youtube, looked like something between butcher and carpentry class 101. ???

You should see hip replacement surgery...makes knee surgery seem ordinary but replacement gets pretty involved as well regardless. My better half does these things so I've had the opportunity to sit in on quite a few procedures. I find spine surgery to be the most fascinating...amazing to watch them stitch under a microscope. Not sure I could do it as in harder cases she's working up to 6-8hrs straight. Hungry? leg cramp? Need to use the restroom? Oh, and 6 months pregnant? Sorry... She had to stop at 6 months as the bladder simply refused to comply lol.

My knee is still like a football, although it doesn't hurt so much now, just sort of throbs... Littledave has kindly dropped my bike off to get a set of TKC70's fitted ready for our hols in June , so that is my target to be better for. Cheers for the support fellers ::008::

They certainly look the business Rog, I can't wait to try them out. Davey recons the bike is more agile on them, but to be fair my EXP rear was starting to square off a bit.
