Brake Pedal Adjustment?

Hi guys,

Is there anyway to adjust the height of the rear brake pedal? I put on the SW motech pegs on the lower setting which is really good for me but my brake pedal is too high now. If there is a way please let me in on how to do it. Thanks in advance because if there is a way I am confident one of you will know how to do it.

Yea many of us have the same problem. On the back of the brake you will find an adjustment screw. You can't mess it up. Mine is adjusted all the way out but it's still to high.

Yeah, it's not hard, but unfortunately, you can only lower it a few mm.

At the bottom of the adjusting screw there are two flats with a small cotter pin through a hole there. I hacksawed off right where the flats turn to threads. Gave me a perfect adjustment with the lowered pegs.

I had no problem lowering the pedal and did not cut anything.

Cutting was for the lowered Motech pegs.
Don't forget to adjust the light switch when done.

You must be more flexible than some of us. The pedal was still too high for me after adjusting all the way till the bolt bottomed out.

I couldn't get the rear brake pedal low enough by the above method, so I took it off it's spline and moved it down a few 'teeth'. Job done.

Splines? That sounds like the shifter.

I have the same problem, way too high for me too but I have learned to deal with it until a fix comes out I like.

I wanted to resurrect this for anyone that stumbles on it like I did.

Like some (most?) people, the brake pedal wouldn't go low enough for me with the stock adjustment options. I decided to do as Don did and cut a bit of the screw off to allow for more adjustment. I took a few pics along the way for the visual learners, but if someone could post a picture of the screw bottomed out, that might help visualize even more. I got ambitious, donned my protective Birkenstocks, and had at it.

I haven't posted to a forum in a while, so bear with me if the pictures don't come through right away.



I removed the master cylinder and clamped it as shown.



I eyeballed where to cut, and made the cut with an angle grinder, being sure to get sparks all over the place. Because I eyeballed it and didn't take as much time as maybe I could have, I only accounted for about half the width of the cutting wheel, and took off more material than I really meant to. This is fine for me, but if I ever sell the bike, this could be an issue. Master cylinder rebuild kits are only $35 and seem to include this part, so no big deal. The picture is a bit dark, but you can see that the screw definitely doesn't bottom out anymore.



I might adjust it lower, but I was running into trouble with my 10mm wrench that turns the screw not having clearance to the 12mm nut below it. Any bicycle shop will have very thin wrenches, so if this proves to be too high, I'll get a thin 10mm wrench to use and make the adjustment. For now, I think this is low enough. I might even come back up a bit.



The one massive issue that I found is that I can't adjust the brake light sensor down enough to compensate. It's attached with a spring that I might either modify or replace with one slightly longer. For the moment, it's disconnected because I virtually never use the rear without the front brake. The pedal itself is so small that using the rear ever is tricky enough in and of itself, but we'll see about a free brake pedal extender in the near future.

Glad to see this thread was resurrected. Reminded me to adjust the rear brake pedal height - lower. The threaded adjuster on the 2015 looks to be longer than that one on my 2012. I adjusted it as much as possible without cutting. Will test it tomorrow.

I rarely use the rear brake on the road. I use it coming in the driveway to keep from compressing the front suspension. Will use it when stopped on a up or down grade. Use it while riding gravel, loose dirt, mud, and other loose situations. I'm not much for off road so I rarely use it.
Saying that I attempted to use the rear brake while changing surfaces while pulling off the highway onto a angled sandy surface connecting the driveway of Bones Road House Restaurant in Gualala. My boot did not make it onto the brake pedal ??? I did make it safely inside for a burger.

Don, you have changed to the Pivot foot pegs. What are differences from the SW Motech's and stock foot pegs?

The Pivot Pegs ride as high as the stock pegs. I had to raise the pedal back up some after having the lowered Motech pegs.

I put SW Motec pegs on my bike too, and can't figure out how to adjust this thing because everything is so tight it feels like someone did it up with LockTite red, and I'm afraid to put too much torque on anything. Is there a nut up and under that is locking things from turning the screw, or is the base nut that rests on the brake pedal supposed to turn to make the adjustment?

You loosened both the nuts and can't get the rod to turn? Once both nuts are loose the rod should turn with just your fingers. And remember, one nut is normal righty tighty, lefty loosey, the other is lefty tighty, righty loosey.
