Brake advice

Here's the deal. I messed up and didn't stay on top of my brakes. The rear brake pads wore down and there was some metal on metal enough to hear it. Probably a good 40-50 miles or so being able to hear it, I was just too thick to pinpoint it on the brakes. There is some light grooving on the rotors.

My question is, is the rear rotor machinable like a car rotor would be or should I just suck it up and replace it all?

It may be machinable but the difference between new and manufacturers recommended minimum thickness of the rotor is pretty small. Rear brake parts in the US are relatively inexpensive. Around $110 for pads and rotor last time. On my third set of rear pads and second rotor.

Replace it. If you can even turn it, the rotor will likely be below minimum thickness when you're done.

IMO, not worth the effort.

Yes changed it myself. Not difficult just need the correct size Torx bit. Don't recall off hand which size it is. The bolts are loctited in as well.

Seems to be the way it happens, several others have had the same wear rate. I always use the linked brakes . 80,000 km and just replaced original front pads.

I've been getting between 10 and 15,000 miles out of the rear pads. The part number changed this last go 'round, maybe better life, dunno. Doug, where did you find a rotor and pads for that $$? I'm at 43,000 and should replace the rotor with the next set of pads.
Ah, $95 @ Procaliber, $103 @ Partsfish for the rear rotor, $23 for pads. Close enough.

Last order from Stadium Yamaha the rotor was 89 and 22 for pads. That option seems gone for now. The other online parts places are a bit higher. Way higher in Canada. Most everything here X 2

Speaking of more expensive, I ended up ordering the galfer wave rotor and the pads to go with them. Anyone have experience with them?

Galfer is the stock rotor so this should create no change. No experience with "Galfer" pads. I am sure they are branded EBC or Ferodo or the like. HH friction material?

My first rear rotor wore out along with three sets of pads before 25,000 miles. My second rotor is wearing well (not much) and I'm at 56,000 miles. No change in braking procedure. But I was very careful and thorough in bleeding the brakes. Seems to have made a difference. YMMV

This is interesting. I had my bike at the dealer for a recall and asked about the rear brakes being thin. They said that it was my riding style. Also warned me about draging the rear brake. I mentioned the linked braking and the Serv. manager just gave me a blank stare. It's prett sad when the cust. Knows more than the dealer. Not to mention one head light didn't work.
