Just got back from an 8800km trip to the Fink Desert Race and one of the high lights was getting the big girl to the top of big Red ::013:: (Highest sand dune in the Simpson Desert)
Gee's did I get a lot of attention from the dirt bike riders while I was up there .
I have to say the bike did it a lot easier than I thought it would, I think I was getting a lot of traction from the spokes as well, :D the sand was very deep

And the tires don't "appear" to be very aggressive off-road tires. Maybe that was the secret?

Reminds me of that famous line in TopGun when just after being humiliated by the "expert", the fellow pilot sitting behind Maverick leans forward and whispers

"Gutsiest move I ever saw Mav"

You should know, I'll defend the off-road prowess of the Tenere anytime anywhere.

But NOT in that stuff!!!

Snakebitten, I have been riding this bike now for about 4 years and it never ceases to amaze me how capable it is off road, every time I ask this bike to excel, that’s just what happens.
Before I tackled this sand dune I was baptised with about 150 km of deep loamy sand, the bike was uncontrollable at low speed so I cranked the speed up, at 80kph it started tracking straight at 110kph it felt very stable, so I sat on about 85 / 90 most of the way and by the time I got on firm ground again I was very confident with how it handles in the sand, it just comes down to trusting the bike.
When I got to Big Red there was 2 ktm 1190, 1 GS 1200 and 2 African Twins none of them had tried to get up there. I love it when I pull up next to those bikes because it’s always the same, they look at the bike then they look up at me ::), then this discreet smirk appears on their face :-\. It was a very different look on their faces when I rode to the top and back down. ???
The only gripe I have with the S10 is its ground clearance, it’s the one thing that really holds this bike back, just 40 mm more and it would perfect, there are not many places I wouldn't take this bike, im even considering crossing the Simpson Desert on it at the moment, just need a back up vehicle to carry some fuel, any takers?

Philistine, no doubt you represent us Big Pig off-roaders well!

Honestly, if you are any kind of motorcycle enthusiast over the years, you discover that OZ is a source for many of the craziest, worldwide. (I mean that with total respect)

Had the pleasure of a 2-week jaunt on a Tenere in Australia. Met a few riders. Shared a few meals. These fellas were not posers.
Just so you know, if I were over there, I'd be happy to drive one of them outback-Toyota truck rigs as support for ya. :)
