Best tyre for paved roads and longevity?

I am off on a European tour in s couple of weeks and need to change my OE tyres which will not go the distance.

I wont be riding off pavement so was thinking Michelin PR4 trail but i gather they wear quickly - i want something that will give me at least 7-8k miles of wear.

I had Anakee 3 tyres on my last bike (DL1000), liked them and got good mileage so am leaning towards these. Some of you seem to hate them however - is this just about gravel/dirt performance? Views for pavement only use?

Open to other suggestions - but want a road tyre or close to it so the likes of K60s are out.

A fall back option is the OE Bridgestone tyre which has been fine.

Thoughts?

Like you wrote, the OEM tires are actually pretty good and financially they are a bargain.

I still am happy with the Mitas E-07 on the road, but costs more.

The Anakee A3 howls loudly, especially in corners when it starts to wear. That alone made me happy when mine wore out and I could trash them.

The TKC70 accumulated less mileage than the A3s when the front was looking worn.

I have the Mitas E-07 on my bike, and it is looking to go about 15K miles. 50/50 tires, so good performance in the dirt and surprisingly well on the road. You can drag a peg with them. I have had the K-60's, they went about 12K miles and were pretty good off road. But the K-60 likes to square off and I did not care for the wet road performance. For me they were squirrely in the rain.

It's funny how personal tyre perception is - i really like A3's, I'm on my second set on the tenere, having had 5 or 6 pairs on my v-strom before. The current pair are at 7k and ready for a change due to the rear being a bit square, but i could get another 1000 miles out of them with no great drama.

PR4s are an excellent choice for pavement riding. Longevity and grip are great. I've run several sets on the S10 in the trail spec and they have lasted up to 10k miles.

We have another very experienced member who I have a lot of respect for and he swears by PR4s. I've not tried them myself.

Get the PR4 road instead of the trail version and it will last longer.

I have run several sets of PR4s on my other machine, which is similar in weight, and they typically last ~10k and I am not easy with the throttle. They are a great choice for touring, as dry and wet grip are very good for all around performance.

+2 on getting the standard PR4 rear with the Trail front. They don't make the standard in our front size and the Trail rear wears out much quicker than the standard version.

I have a set of Pirelli Angel GTs that will go on for my next road only trip. The FJR friends like them a lot and were getting an easy 10k+ from the rears and more from the fronts with exceptional wet and dry traction.

On the Anakee III tires, the rears are a very nice tire and resist squaring off for a good time before that occurs, even with lots of highway miles. They typically last 13-14k for me on the rear. The common dislike, including me, is the fronts. They wear in an odd tri-band pattern for most riders and can cup badly, (though cupping is partly rider style), though different bikes seem to vary, starting to become noticeable around 6k miles and getting progressively worse. I won't put another front A3 on, but wouldn't hesitate to run a rear again. I have considered trying the A3 rear and Conti Trail Attack 2 front combo, having had good results with the Conti TA 2 on other bikes in the past.

The Angel is a good tire for traction, but I was lucky to get 6k miles from one (rear). And it was very squared off by that point. After having good luck with Bridgestone BT-023s on the Honda ST1300, I started using them on the FJR. I have about 7k miles on them, and expect to get 10k. They are dual compound, and I noticed that Yamaha is now using them as OE. I don't know how your friends were able to get that many miles. Maybe/hopefully you'll have their luck.

Time will tell. I have a similar riding style to the people I know that are getting 10k+ from the Angels. I also know some getting 4k at best from them. Vastly different throttle/braking techniques in play there. I ride The Pace and typically get decent mileage from my tires. Heat, speed and surface type are major contributing factors, but the the right wrist is the main one in variations in tyre life.

All really helpful thank you.

I am feeling reassured on longevity and am going to go with the PR4.

Cheers

But I can't help it when I get on the FJR! ::025:: And we do have crappy roads around here, which is why I spend MUCH more time on the Tenere.

I am running Dunlop Roadsmart 3 and they are excellent tires and out perform the PR4 in some areas. Front tire wear being one. They turn in really nice.

The stock Bridgestone's performed as advertised and I saw over 7K miles. Swapped those for the Anakee II and I felt those tires were more stable at lean and across tar snakes but Michelin axed that tire for the Anakee III. The A3 rear is a solid choice but the front wears odd and quickly. I have a set of Pirell Scorpion Trail II on the way and looking forward to wearing them out this summer.

Metzler tourance NEXT have a very hard center stripe for long highway jaunts. I actually hate this tire because it won't wear out to the point I can justify throwing a set of the Mitas e07's on it.

I take it offroad as long as it's dry. In mud you get no steering

Keep me updated on how they work. It was a coin toss between those and the Bridgestone A40s. I used the Scorpions on the KLR with good results, but the Tenere is a whole different monster.
