Never done the GPS thing but thinking about doing so for the Super10. Leaning towards the Garmin Montana but mounts seem to be limited as they are a new model. anyway, not opposed to a Zumo but need some advice on the best place to purchase one. Any advice?

Third vote for Amazon.

Make sure that is actually says 'sold and shipped by Amazon' you won't have any problems if you need to return it for some reason.

Lots of others sell 'thru' Amazon and may not be so accommodating if you have any issues.

If you look around you can get a good deal on a Garmin nuvi and save a bunch of money. Being waterproof is not worth the money difference. This is just my opinion.
I have two Iway 600c and they were, and are a great gps.. Just don't make them anymore. :(

I have a Garmin 1490t and so far it is working out well. Whatever you get, make sure you have multi point routing. Also being able to make the route on the gps, as well as on your computer and transfer to your gps.

Good Luck

Thanks guys - checking out the Nuvi now. Just have in my head I need waterproof but, again, I have never used a GPS anyway. Looks the only waterproof Nuvis are the 500 and 550. Any preferences?

I would say Amazon or Costco to buy the GPS.

As far as whether or not the motorcycle Zumo versions are worth the "extra" $$$, I believe they are because

1) Waterproof
2) Screen is easier to read in sunlight!

Whatever you get, I am sure you will be happy.

Best Regards,

TCR

As an owner of a Nuvi 550 who has spent time playing with the newer 5" models at Costco, I'd have to say go with a newer model unless the waterproof thing is an absolute requirement. The new models are so much faster to render and the bigger screen is really nice.

There is a lot to consider when purchasing a GPS unit. I think a unit designed specifically for motorcycles is a good idea. Check out the features of the Zumo's and compare with other brands to decide what you really want.
If by "best place to purchase one" you mean price, you may want to consider a factory remanufactured unit. I used Pricegrabber.com and weeded thru those resellers with less than stellar reviews and picked up a Zumo 550 for half price and got the same warranty as new. 3 years old and it's still working fine.

I have a Zumo 660 and am happy. I definitely feel that waterproof is important on a motorcycle.

I watched amazon for a factory refurb deal and saved a good amount. Still comes with a factory warranty.

I have the Nuvi 550....it is waterproof (well, says it is)...I did ride through a bit of a storm yesterday and it worked fine...this was an older refurb I got for $175, as I didn't want to invest too much upfront without trying it out. The touch screen also responds while wearing gloves...important as well.

Another option you might want to consider is Teletype Worldnav 3500....same size as the Nuvi, that screen is a bit small...and is also waterproof and comes with a mount. Do an internet search and you can find it for around $260.

This company has been making GPS for commercial trucking for years and this is a MC specific GPS. If I hadn't just bought my Nuvi, I'd buy it.

I would check each gps and make sure it had multi point routing. I don't think the first one does, but the 1450lmt does.
I have the 1490ltm and really like it. Still learning about it, but it does everything I need.

If you don't have to have it today, I'd wait. Garmin dropped the price on their 665s from $999 to $799. I don't think all of the back-stock has been sold because I can't find a unit for less than $750. I don't think 10% off is too much to ask. 20% off and I'd be happy.

Why Garmin? They work. I've got an old Vista C backpacking unit that I use on a RAM mount. It works great even with my gloves on. The MapQuest software works reasonably well. On a trip to Laguna Seca a few years ago, I'd map out half a day of riding on my laptop over breakfast then upload the route into my Vista C. I had turn by turn directions until I stopped for lunch and plotted out the rest of the day. I'd stick to half-day routes so I could improvise or follow suggestions from locals.

I've used Magellen units before with less success.

I'll be buying a 665 when the price drops to $700ish. Even if the price doesn't drop then I'll buy one in the Spring as part of my gearing up for the Whitehorse Rally.

What sort of riding will you do?
If all of your riding is on the highway the Zumo series will suit you well and you will be completely satisfied.

If you will do any serious off road work and you want tthe ability to build a point to point route you will be happier with one of the Garmin chart plotters - 276, 478, etc.

I have a Zumo 550. I ride with a couple guys that have Zumos and a couplem with 276, 478's. We do a major off road trip every year. The 276/478 guys create th off road routes and if we need to re-route off road, they do it. Can be done on the Zumo, but it does not like point to point straight line routing.

Lots of discussion on ADVRider about GPS.
