I was exposed to that quite a bit during my childhood. My dad and uncles never bought parts, they just fabricated them from old rusty scrap from a prior project. By the time they were done it was better than anything you could have bought. The problem is all of them had huge shops, tools, endless supply of parts/scraps. I find for me to do a project I have to buy 15 tools just to do the work and afterwards I don't have any space to store them...... Thus, Revzilla (and others) gets more of my money than they should. Hopefully one day I will have my own pole barn filled with all of the goodies needed to make your own stuff.
I personally don't have a very big shop, just a small room in my basement, and not a big selection of tools at that. Heck mostly Harbor Freight stuff cause it's cheap (never had one fail yet) and I don't use them all that much to justify buying higher priced stuff. One here, one there and you can get going.
Buy ready made stuff and there is where your money goes. Short term thinking.
I can usually I can buy a tool just for one project and save money on that project vs buying something.
Now I have that tool for the next project plus all the others, vs just out of money.
I suppose I should just keep my mouth shut......
