Well I got around to the install of a backrest for the ST. It didnt come out bad, I matched up a scooter backrest with the Alt Rider rack, now the wife is happy, I didn't have to go with the big top box look and there is plenty of room left over for one of those U shaped bags. The backrest is easy on/off (3 bolts) and I only have 80 bucks into it (the backrest+hardware) - Let me know what you think ::017::

I like it, but you may want to add a little pivoting action to it, as in posterior/anterior. Possibly add the ability to adjust it up or down unless you have done that prior and it fits you perfectly. I have built several for bikes over the years and supporting the lumbar spine is all that is needed. Therefore, keep the pad low and you'll have comfort. Good job.

What did you use for the scooter backrest? And, did it come with the mounting bracket?

Thanks for the comments, to answer, to modify for verticle and horizontal adjustment would require more $$$, I was trying to keep it simple and cheap (had the wife sit in her spot and placed the backrest in position before mounting) I used the backrest for a Piaggio Beverly TB104 scooter, as for attaching it was just a matter of drilling 2 holes and bolting it up, and I wouldn't attach to the stock plastic rack since it wouldn't hold handle the stress.
I'm luvin this bike - and the wx is finally cooling off out here to ride ::012::

*****UPDATE*****
Not sure where the original backrest thread is so I used this hope no one minds. Duane from PCA mailed to me this past Monday one of the prototype racks that will hold the backrest. I fitted it on the bike and took a group of pics and sent him a link so he could see where it needs tweeking. I'm also sending him some measurements I took so he can think about possible spacers for his rack. More to come and I'm sorry there isn't a whole bunch more to share but mainly to let those interested know that it is in the works.

Update**** I ordered the Givi backrest for the Piaggio Beverly scooter TB104 (got it from Twisted Throttle in the spring) and it came with everything you need bolts spacers bracket. I had to drill 2 holes in the altrider rack that's it.
In answer to another member that wants build his own, the backrest is 8 inches tall and 11 inches wide. Good luck

Any of you guys that had (have) and FJ1300 have any thoughts about whether the FJ pad could be modified to fit the OEM tail bag for the Tenere?

I have that Top Box on my FJR but alas I do not have one for my Tenere to try it on. I think I'm going to go with Caribou side panniers and a soft bag for the trunk.
I am waiting on the back rest as well.

I don't think so. The FJR top case has a hinge sort of in the middle. The top case hinge for the Tenere is about an 1" down from the top. And if I remember correctly, the FJR pad attaches with three screws. My pee brain can't think of a way to attach the pad without 1) cutting it into pieces. 2) rigging the attachment points in such a way that wouldn't pass through the pad so you'd end up with screw tips poking out here and there.

I'm thinking about using a closed cell foam that one of my racer buddies uses for his saddle. My wife always rides with her Dainese spine protector, so it's more about providing her with a little cushion and having something a tad grippy for her to lean into instead of the rigid Touratech top case I'm looking at. Plus, using foam is cheap. Cutting up a new FJR pad then not having it work out isn't.

This place offers different thicknesses and recommends using a special glue which they sell as well.

My $0.02. Results may vary...
