Re: Over sized Safari tank for the Super Tenere

Please put me in for "once it's done" category - sure would appreciate having longer legs between fill ups. Too often I catch myself running on vapors and it will only be a matter of time when luck will turn the other way and I don't really appreciate pushing a bike with all that girth ::013::

Might be worth checking out the modified tank that RideOnADV can do: http://rideonadv.com/shop/super-tenere-performance/rideonadv-large-capacity-fuel-tanks/
read post #1...again...

this is for the masses NOT for just one individual - me

yes i am aware of this but this is not what this thread is about, i am not looking for options and alternatives...this thread is just to see if there is an interest in having a manufacturer producing a larger tank for us that do ride long distance miles, so let me know if you are interested or not if the product is produced

Paul, halfway round the world now, Sth America for a year and never had to dip into my reserve supply (rotopax). Came close once. In Morocco now heading to Iran/Pakistan/India, don't anticipate being short on range either.

If I was doing it again I would try harder to find a fuel bladder - rather that have to carry the mostly-empty Rotopax all the time. Or get a number of one liter bottles and get creative with places to strap them. But the bladder would be my first choice. Only use it when you think you need to, and even then only carry gas for 50 miles, stop and top up the tank, fold the bladder up and carry on...

I have a rule though and that is fill up when half-empty, unless you're sure there is gas further down the road. As long as you're not doing an Iron Butt the time wasted at extra fuel stops doesn't matter! ::024::
are you in morocco??? where exactly???

Me, Eric V, Rusty and Tonie from the 2013 Iron Butt Rally with auxiliary tanks, the Aussie Cudlins with their modified front tank, Tabasco and customers with his sweet modded tank... ah.. running out of known big plumbed volumes.... the Wellers will run something.

Not too many riders opt for plumbed extra in or expanded tank volumes currently.

Hopefully that will change if Safari make a big tank available.

Re: Over sized Safari tank for the Super Tenere

Having had BMW Dakars, Adventures x3 and singles with big tanks there is only one short coming for me, that is the ST being 200km short on range, the bike wanting to stop before I'm ready is at least a disappointment hence a bigger tank and not a bladder or can. If Safari want a trial bike I'm localism.

Re: Over sized Safari tank for the Super Tenere

i'm in the extremely rare situation for a US based rider (maybe the only one), i own a xt660z and a xt1200z so as an owner of both knowing there reliability and pure greatness all i can perceive is the design team was different for both bikes or there was a huge over sight or someone simply didn't talk up when the bikes were designed...the over sight being the fuel tank

both bikes have 23 liter tanks...who when designing an adventure bike as they are both advertised as, why would the 660 have a 23 liter plastic tank and the already heavier and twice as powerful 1200 have a a steel 23 liter tank...there is absolutely no logic

this is the point that i make why i am surprised no one is interested...the point of the Safari tank is to make the bike complete and how it should have been delivered from the factory or at least a factory option i.e. GS or GSA

i am also surprised that an aftermarket tank manufacturer hasn't spotted this error and jumped all over it, a simple look at the larger displacement adventure bikes i.e. KTM, Triumph and BMW have from stock or already aftermarket larger tanks available...simply reading ride reports shows the Super Tenere is slowly becoming the ride of choice...

...just my 0.02 cents

Re: Over sized Safari tank for the Super Tenere

I come from a bike that was on vapor by 140 miles, did over a hundred thousand miles on her, 200-250 miles is outstanding. I think most will decide when that once in a lifetime run to the Arctic, or Ushuaia comes around they'll haul the extra fuel, otherwise it's really tough to run one of these things out of fuel.
Paul, you and a small slice of the motorcycling world, maybe single digit percentile, spend far more time on a bike in parts of the world that maybe weren't meant to be ridden across. It's much more than a once in a lifetime thing for that group of world travelers, it becomes a life style. The challenge, the mystery over the next mountain range, very addicting. There are only a few Iron Butt Rallye riders here that I'm aware of, similar needs, similar addiction, with a 'game' thrown in. Since the Tenere is taking off in the LD world, I too have seen that to be true, perhaps asking for customers for a Safari tank might be better served on an LD forum rather than here where folks are just tickled pink with things as they are, where 200 miles is further than they can sit at one time anyway.
There is really no need for you to continue pushing, yes, the tank could be considered small by a select few riders, it's not a defect in design, it can be thought to be huge by other criteria.

Don

your comment pretty much hits the nail on the head for this forum, there seems minimal interest most names have come from advrider, the riders here even though a large number bitch and moan about not enough gas they don't seem to want to contribute to there own gain...for free - a name on a forum, there is zero commitment

none are even interested in potential cost when done, then maybe decide - 'if its too much i'd back out is an option of course'...without numbers its a no go, period!!!

also none are thinking to the future it seems when they may have the opportunity to do "that ride", and the tank will be available on the suppliers shelf because the molds were made...case in point i have a ktm 625sxc, safari stepped up to build a 27 liter tank over 11 years ago due to interest from riders even though ktm were offering a 24 and 18 liter (no longer available), so its still available from safari even though ktm made the bike for two years.

i bought a sxc last year, and because of that group of riders 11 years ago i had the opportunity to buy the 27 liter tank last year. 11 years ago i never thought i'd ride round the world but last year i did

but hey...whatever, just trying to help out the masses, costs nothing to put your name down...then i get a pm from a moderator on here saying its not worthy of a sticky, again a free option 'he as an individual' wasn't interested in hitting one key on his keyboard and not willing trying to help out the masses either

i guess i'll just leave this thread to run its own course and if i get names for the list i'll add them...you guys go back about your business and i'm real sorry for trying to help out and do something good for my fellow riders

It's not an argument you either want a bigger tank or not, it's important to me. We were asked who was interested I was , those that aren't don't need to convince us we are wrong or can be converted to a bladder or a servo stop when there is not one.

Re: Over sized Safari tank for the Super Tenere

Put me down for the "in the future" category. Where I ride now, I'm never so far out that running out of gas is a concern, but I did buy this bike with the goal of riding Alaska and other LD rides where the extra fuel capacity would be welcome.

Re: Over sized Safari tank for the Super Tenere

I blabber more than most here. But outta 4000+ posts, I don't think I've ever complained about fuel range. Nor do I remember much complaint here by others.

Im glad that there are those that are interested, but Im not sure the guys here are "bitchers and moaners" on the subject.

Extended range tank for under $5:

Requirements:
Empty gallon jug. Preferably from 2% milk.
1/2 foot 3/8 ID tubing
Duct Tape
No fear of gas spilling on you

Steps:
1. Cut hole in bottom of jug.
2. Tape tube to bottom of jug.
3. Place tube into tank.
4. Tape jug to the top of the tank.
5. Wonder why you haven't seen a KLR owner do this yet.
