Any tips on a particular tool/method to use?

TIA

It's been 3 years since I did mine so not remembering real well how I did mine but I'm thinking you can do it without any tools. Try holding the nut by hand and turn the socket on the top side by hand to loosen it.
If that does't work, you should be able to use some channel lock pliers to turn the nut.

The connector for the socket is under the top cowling inside a large boot with other wiring. You can disconnect it there.

Mine was hard, too. Had to use some metal tool to rotate the nut. But once it moved some, it's very easy.

I dont know what size the nut is exactly, could be 25 or 27mm.
I got a small stamped sheet metal Y spanner with a socket I bought off Aliexpress - so it worked for me.

Normal sized spanner will not swing in the narrow space.
I dont even think you can spin the socket from the top. many socket come key'ed. either a flat spot on the side or a notch and pin for alignment.

The hard part is usually the nut is thin and fingers are soft and slip off the nut.
You might be able to get 2 short length of flat metal bar and try and pinch the nut sides while twisting - you just have to break it loose then it should spin off easy.

I saved my original 12V socket, so I checked it out.
Gigitt is correct it is keyed so you cannot turn the top until you loosen the nut on bottom.

The nut is a slotted round nut (plastic).
If you cant' get it with some small channel lock pliers, try a flat blade screw driver. Put the blade in one of the slots and push on it to turn the nut.

If you are replacing it with a usb charger/voltmeter like a lot of people have done, it will probably be slightly larger than the hole.
It could be forced in but probably better to enlarge the hole slightly.
I just used a round chainsaw file and lightly went around the hole, it really doesn't take much.
