Arrow de-cat question.

Hi all. Just a quick question. I should be receiving my Arrow de-cat kit soon. I have a dyno session booked for the end of the month and i was just wondering how lean the bike runs with the Arrow, an Akrapovic can and no mods to the fuelling. Is it safe to run around without any mods or do i risk engine damage?
Thanks.

I've heard reports that changing out the OEM muffler with the Akra can doesn't dramtically lean the mixture; however, the Arrow decat headers make the bike run downright ratty (suggesting a severely lean mixture) without a Power Commander to richen it up. That in itself would make me very wary of running that way, expecially running 'er hard on a dyno and risking heat damage. Just my 2 pennies worth.

I'm sure Tabasco and others who have hands-on experience with the Arrow headers will chime in soon 8)

They run a bit rich stock, or at least my UK bike does.

Mainly in the second half of the rev range, but with the clutch switch mod it runs as rich lower down as well so I would guess you may be OK. I only tested 2nd / 3rd to see the difference from the clutch switch mod and only at WOT.

You should really do full and part throttle runs in all gears to check, and also block off the fresh air bleed otherwise the dyno results will read weaker than they are (the pipe for this is on the LHS) soemwhere.

This is 3rd gear, the top end is fairly rich even without the clutch switch mod, with the switch toggled the lower end richens up (and butterly's probably open a bit more)

If your lucky you may get away with the clutch mod and end up with a really sweet motor, please report back with power and fuel curves ::008::

That's with stock muffler, cat, and air filter is it not...? A far cry from running an Akra with decat headers, so there's a lot of speculation happening here. Hopefully the dyno operator will stop after first pull if he sees it's too lean. If I remember right, the people who reported a ratty running engine with the decat headers and no PC were saying that condition was at idle and very low RPM were the mixture seems about the same with switch shorted or not, so the mixture might be OK at lower-mid to upper RPMS.

That was quick. Less than 24 hours from ordering, the kit is here. Really easy to fit too. That's one thing i do love about this bike - like the TDM before it - it's so simple to work on.
One question for those who have the system fitted. Did you remove the rubber coating from the spring clamps that rub against the headers? The ones to the right hand side of the header seem to come in direct contact with the header..

I removed the rubber from the tight ones AFTER they coked onto the new header, I recommend you remove them BEFORE.

If they do coke up, a bit if SctiochBrite will take care of it, ask me how I know!

Yes all stock, the bike was very lean at idle, as well as at very low revs - but this is not very real world as you probably aren't very often at WOT at those revs - although saying that I doubt the bike actually is WOT as the fly by wire may well not offer full throttle at those RPM's.

The only way to be sure is a fair bit of dyno time to check the fuelling at various throttle openings, I would guess the over-rich fuelling would compensate for a can more than adequately with the clutch switch mod but perhaps the headers as well would push it a bit too far - only the dyno can tell.

Been out on it this morning. I've run it with the clutch switch mod. There is a slight "wooly" feeling when coming off the throttle at 2000 rpm, but apart from that it seems much more eager to rev. I don't intend to do too many miles between now and the dyno run - but my overall impression leads me to believe that there is so much more to come from the S10 motor.
Looking forward to see what kind of results i can get.

I'am wondering also if de-cat headers will "improve" Akra's sound a bit...

Since a 'cat' also has a tendency to act as another 'muffler' so-to-speak, it's removal would tend to increase the 'noise' that the muffler sees. If it is noticeable or not is anyone's guess...
