Are you 5'9-5'10"? What aftermarket screen/bracket are you happy with?

I'm 5'9" with a longish torso. With the stock screen in the tall position, I can tuck down 3-4 inches and escape the bothersome wind noise that seems to come up under my helmet. I want to NAIL the wind protection upgrade without overspending. I have read, and analyzed, nearly everything on the subject and it seems the most recommended screens are either too tall or too short.

I don't want to look through the screen, but just look over it by 2" or so. It seems I would need wind protection at 20-21" height, or 3-4" wind protection over the stock 17" windshield in high position. However, when I measure, anything over 2" seems like it would intrude on my natural line-of-sight - making this a tricky problem to solve.

MY TOP CHOICES:

1) MRA touring is same height as stock at 17". Nowhere could I find the height of just the wing. It does not look like it would add 3-4" of effective protection above stock. But I am I wrong? (Alternately, this theoretically could be perfect if I install the low seat which I have considered. I know, changes everything... argh!)

2) MRA Xcreen looks too tall at 21" high without the wing... unless it can be lowered at least 2 inches from my stock set-up in the high position. Can I use a lower setting with the Xcreen, as I can with the stock screen? That might work for me, though I would then be concerned it would be too big (hot) during the Summer given it's over all width and height.

3) National Cycle V-Stream Sport Height (+1" over stock) or, Sport-Tour (+4" over stock)... with an adjustable bracket?

An adjustable bracket seems like an all-around winner. Some variability would be nice for, A) dialing the buffeting in as well as, B) adjusting air flow for hot vs. cold days. I have considered trying an adjustable bracket with the stock screen, but it seems it would come up shy of the 3-4" of extra protection I need. My other concerns are introducing too much wind & water in under the screen, as I live in the Pacific Northwest and ride in a fair amount of cold and wet. Besides the bracket+new screen = $3-400! What to do?

I like riding year-round and need a versatile set-up. I deal with a lot of rain and subsequent fogging and vision issues and wonder if blocking the wind from blowing under (and on) my helmet would prevent good ventilation needed for defogging.

I imagine I won't know till I try, but I thought I'd post this anyway. If money weren't an issue, I'd get a bracket first, bigger screen later (choosing a size based on what I learn from adjusting the stock screen).

Are there any 5'9" - 5'10" guys out there who have this worked this issue and perfected the situation optimally?

Re: I'm 5'9" - MRA Vario Touring vs. Xcreen vs. V-Stream w/adjustable bracket

Hello, Like you am 5'9" weigh 235 29 inseam and a long body sorta anti gorilla like :) went with the 24 inch Parabellum works like a charm. I went from the OEM Tall to the Parabellum and honestly it cuts the wind like my goldwing did so good in fact I am almost afraid when it get near 90 with the type humidity we have here around 85% that it will cut to much wind and I will burn up so I traded my tall OEM for a stock OEM just in case this turns out to be true.
With that said my next choice was going to be the MRA Vario touring. This is the screen on the rental bike at gsmmotorent I rented that bike before buying my S10 and really liked the adjustable top wing on the fly. But when riding in the 30's around here I was glad I had the parabellum. Just my opinion since I figured we close to same size.

The California Scientific website has a clever web page that determines your torso size and recommends screen height. Even if you do not purchase their screen, you can use the screen dimensions to compare other brands.

Their formula worked out well for exactly what you describe. Tall enough to not have to crouch, but still be looking over the top.

Can't have everything :D in one. I think I will need summer helmet too.

Or you could keep your stock OEM and add a MadStad bracket so you could raise it as needed. With the Yamaha Wind deflectors and the bracket, it makes a super combination with just about any windshield

I have the National Cycle VStream Sport-Tour (mid-height/ light tint). Also tried the Sport (short w/ dark tint).
I originally bought the bike with the stock screen & MadStad bracket.
I'm 5-11, 32" inseam.

I settled on the Vstream Sport-Tour, although the stock screen with the MadStad prolly works just as good, and lets you adjust for different conditions. I just prefer the hard mounted Vstream. I sold the Madstad.
I didnt like the dark tint on the sport because I couldnt see through it.
For reference, pics of the bike with the Vstream & the Madstad...

This combo didnt work for me at all. The screen sat too high (I like to look over the top edge) and it seemed like no matter how it was adjusted I was getting ALOT of wind blast to the upper chest area. YMMV.

Btw, I ordered both screens thru Revzilla- Love the no-hassle return policy ::008::

I am 5'10 1/2" and have been using the Madstad with the stock windscreen. Raised all the way up I can get it to point that I am still looking over the top of the screen but have the wind flowing over my head with no buffeting. I have tried a buddy's Cee Bailey large, 24" high, on my Madstad bracket, and it seems like it was the real trick. I can run it low on the bracket, about one inch above the bottom and still have a smooth air flow. I can also see over the top of it by about three inches as well. With the stock bracket the Cee Bailey created significant buffeting for me. I will probably purchase the Cee Bailey this fall once it cools down. But with the California summer hear the air flow around the sides of the stock windscreen will keep me cool, and I will still have no buffeting. So for me, I think starting with the bracket and the ample adjustment range is the best way to use money. I may never purchase another screen given how the stock is working with the Madstad bracket, only time will tell. Another thought on the Cee Bailey was I was able to turn the handlebars full side-to-side without the mirrors hitting the windscreen at almost any adjustment angle on the Madstad bracket. Some others look like this will not work and they will hit the mirrors. There are many comments on this forum of similar types of problems hitting mirrors or winglets with various different windscreens.

I made a video on my installation and it is attached. Towards the end of the video I show the range of adjustments available with the Madstad bracket if you are interested.

One thing I will say, on my Harley FXDL it took me four different windscreens to get it right and I only really got it right when I went to an adjustable bracket. So that might be the cheapest way to start. Good luck.

+10. I have the Cal Sci windscreen and it is hands down then best wind protection I have ever ridden behind. NO buffeting, great protection out to my shoulders. I would never consider a different screen. I have been behind that screen for 24,000 mile and flat love it.

In my opinion none could be better. ::015::

I just installed a National Cycle V stream sport tour. I'm 5'10" with 32" inseam. So far I love it. Stopped all the head buffeting and seems to be putting the air about two inches above my head. Plus, I am looking over it rather than through it.

Calsci medium works great with stock brackets . I can have my visor up at 70 mph
with no wind issue .Never had a windshield work this good before on any thing .
My car has more buffeting with the windows down .

Howdy,
What ever you settle on adding the OEM Wind Deflectors will make it even better. Fairly cheap too.

I'm 5'9" 188lbs 30" inseam and use stock seat in low position... Stock wind screen in high position no buffeting and I look over the windscreen.
That being said it could be your helmet. I use a Scorpion EXO-1000 all the time and really like it and the results.
YMMV

I'm 5.11, got the oem windshield, oem wind defelctor and the madstad braket.

I found the perfect spot with the position show on the picture. That's make me thinking that I should get the yamaha taller windshied maybe.
I am 5'9, 175 lbs. The same combo works perfectly for me as well. It took a few easy adjustments to get the right high, and attack angle. The Yamaha wing deflectors were a major improvement.
