Anyone running Cortech Super 2.0 or similar soft luggage without side racks?

Looking at adding either the Cortech Super 2.0 saddlebags or similar (Dryspec D20/Nelson Sport 40) and wondering if this is possible without side racks. I contacted TT and they said it may be possible to get by without side racks if I cinch up the bags tight enough that they do not hang down. Anyone running smaller soft luggage without side racks? If so, are you having any issues with either the muffler or right side tipping in toward the wheel? I know I can flip the right side passenger handle upside down to hold the bag out (I would prefer not to do this as my wife will be a passenger when I am using them), but the muffler side is another story. Pics would be awesome. Thanks.

I have both the Cortech Super 2.0 saddlebags and Ortlieb Moto speed bags (https://touratech-usa.com/Store/Touratech-Waterproof-MOTO-Speed-Bags). The cortech were given to me brand new. The cortech are not in the same category. I use these as loaners when riding with folks that do not have panniers and need to carry stuff. They have only been used a couple times and are not the ones I would personally choose to use with the Ortliebs in the same room. I like the ortlieb bags a lot and have used them on my Tenere prior to getting hard panniers. I prefer them because they ride higher, can be compressed and compact, and they are waterproof (really waterproof). The Cortech do come with a plastic cover to put on them. Throw a Ortlieb rack pack across the seat and you can haul all you need and know it will stay dry. I have used them on my KLR and WR250R and would never worry a bit. I think if you bought the Ortlieb you would not ever think you need to upgrade your soft side bags, with the Cortech you probably would. I think the price difference is about $100. I own lots of Ortlieb products including bicycle pannier and dry bags. Spendy, but I think the best in their category. Touratech recently became the U.S. distributor for Ortlieb. As a side note, I have Tusk Panniers on my WR for around town so I can lock stuff up. If I am going to take a trip off road, I will use the Ortliebs.

Thanks for the link to the Ortliebs. I had not heard of them and will definitely take a look. The key is I am trying to find quality bags that will work without side racks and want to use them as suitcases (his and hers) :D

It appears these side bags have a hard plastic side that faces the bike. I would think this would help in keeping the bags out and away from sagging in toward the rear wheel.

I used Ortliebs on a trip. I have a toolbox mounted on the right side which the bag rests on. On the left side on used some tape tp protect the exhaust shield. They were tested in heavy rains and stayed dry. I may move to hard bags someday, but for now, these work.

If I went back to soft bags, rather than the big piece of insulating neoprene to cover the exhaust shield, I think I'd use a piece of that 3M paint protection film. That stuff is tough, and if it'll stick to the hood of a black car in blazing sunshine, it's got to stand up to sticking to the muffler shield.

I love those Nelson Rigg bags. I have the same set up in my attic right now.

I really like that design and would resolve any need for side racks without question. However I don't know if I could talk my bride into climbing inside ::025::

I have cortechs with no rack. I added a short piece of strap steel under the grab bars to hold them out from the muffler and tire. I don't consider this a permanent solution, but it works for now.

I am looking at manufacturing something similar. I have a professional welder in the family so I can expand beyond my abilities a little. He takes payments in beers

Years back, you could buy a soft luggage support for a V-Strom from Dan Vesel. I had one, and it worked very well. I don't think the company is in business any more; they seemed to have disappeared a few years ago, and links to their site were broken. The design looks like it could be made relatively simply with a tubing bender and some electrical conduit. I'm sure the design could be adapted to the Super Tenere. Everything you need could be found at a Lowe's or Home Depot.

It's hard to even find a photo of the bar on line; this is the best one I could locate:

That rectangular piece was a piece of ABS plastic, bolted to the luggage bar. It increased the surface area of the bar and gave the soft bag a wider perch to sit against. The front of the bar bolted to the passenger footpeg mount, and the rear bolted to a hole in the rear fender. The ends of the tubing were flattened, to make them easier to attach.

Side Case Mounting Kit for Soft Panniers

Thought I might take advantage of the vast knowledge base of the forum.
I'm a new owner of a 2017 S10 ES
I just purchased a set of Nelson Rig Soft Saddlebags (pictured below).
They measure 17"L x 9"W x 14"H.
I'm told they do not require a side case mounting kit which I have a hard time believing.
To me the Yamaha side case mounting kit looks like it is strictly for their hard cases.
and would not support these soft bags very well.
Though I eventually will probably get hard cases (not necessarily Yamaha) I'd like to avoid
having to trash one side bag mounting setup for another.
From the research I have done so far it seems like I might be best off with the Givi mounting kit.
Their rack seems like it would support and protect the Nelson Rig soft bags and their hard cases look
pretty decent for when I am ready to move in that direction.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Side Case Mounting Kit for Soft Panniers

I am not sure about this, I haven't tried it, heard it from the guy I bought my 2016 from. He said you can turn the grab rails around and they work pretty good for soft luggage, helps keep the bags away from frame and muffler. I haven't seen it anywhere else, though.

Update-So I did not care for the Dryspec D20 bags. Particularly the way they fit with the passenger grab handles. Since the point of me getting side bags is so me and my SO can travel together, I need to keep them in place. Also I did not like the way the left side sat on the muffler shield or the right side just hung there with no support at all. So they went back.

I decided to go with quick disconnect side racks-Givi PLR2119 and they are ordered. This opens up way more options for side cases. I am now back in the research phase of side cases vs saddlebags. I will post an update with Pics once this evolves. My wife says I am way over thinking this.... ::025::
