Anyone got experience with top box racks?

I'm toying with fitting a rack on top of my top box to carry my waterproofs in a 10 litre roll bag, thus maximising the room inside the box whilst on tour, and carrying hopefully less baggage, I usually get away with a 40 litre roll bag for 4-5 day's,.

My concern is these racks have a small contact patch on their feet where the sit on the lid of the box, has anyone fitted one and experienced any problems i.e. screws coming slack, letting water in, or stress causing cracks at the mounting points?

I run a rack, on my Givi Monokey Top Box. Seals OK, no leak problems in 11 years use, using the standard Givi fittings. Watch the load though & make sure your box was designed to take a rack (easy with Givi/Kappa).

Occasionally, when travelling 'light', we use a small tank bag, 46L top box & put our wet gear in a submersible roll top bag that we net to the rack, always clipping the roll top element to the rack for safety sake. We always pack the wet gear so it lays flat in the bag, in a defined order, to speed up the process if we get caught at the roadside. This set up covers us for a long weekend & leaving panniers at home makes filtering so much easier. The rack, even when not in use, provides a steady hand hold for the pillion - useful when fully loaded, with panniers in place.

You may be better off attaching 'footman' loops to the topbox. A little silicon and loctite will solve any issues that may arise.

Much less intrusive for when not in use, which is most of the time.

I put those footman's loops on a set of ammo can panniers I made for my old V-strom, and they are a handy thing to have. I was going to put them on my Duratool top case, but I decided that I didn't want the load on the rear to be that high.

If you decide to use footman's loops, I got mine from McMaster-Carr.
