One has brakes and the other does not.

In the old days... Neither had brakes.

And really not that long ago. Ask Mashy! ;)

In fact, at one time in "Class C" AMA professional flat track it was *ILLEGAL* to have brakes on the bikes on a dirt oval.

If you ever have the chance, check out Costa Mesa Speedway in Orange County, California. My wife and I used to have season tickets, and it was quite the spectacle on Saturday nights. The promoter also rides a Super Ten!

Got back from the Cannon Ball a few days ago and haven't been online till now. Dallara you have me figured out! That seems like a lifetime ago and now I'm just a guy who enjoys his Tenere. It was great meeting Fred and I don't know if I should thank him or not for letting me ride his bike! I now have a wish list with the flash being number one. Most of the Cannon Ball riders sent their bikes home on a truck and they flew home. Ralph White, along with his brother Tom and my friend Tim, all turned around in New York and rode home. It was over 6500 miles for us and Ralph and I were on Tenere's and the others were on 2014 GSA's. The GSA's were able to keep up with us but had mandatory stops at many Starbucks. lol I paid for the trip with the money I saved by not buying the BMW. I have to say in all seriousness, both bikes are fantastic and none of us had any troubles. Gerald from Oklahoma was on a wee strom and kicked my but in the early sand portion of the ride. We are just lucky to some good equipment to choose from.
I enjoy this site and and have learned a great deal from you guys.

Same result new bike ::012::

Bryan Smith set a new track record during qualifying and then paced the field all the way to the finish. Even with all the restarts in the main, the mighty Kawi never failed to lead the pack into the first turn. Bryan was on top of his game Sunday, as was the whole crew. Bryan also won the Dash for Cash and his heat for good measure.

Just a little sidebar here, the chassis was an all new design and that was its first outing. Even against all the well sorted, and now unrestricted, H-D's Bryan got the job done ::015::

Gerald has mad skills. And for such a "plus size" guy too! ;D Did you also meet Dan from OKC? He went and took a GoPro so I expect there to be some bad ass video. Sounds like you all had bucket list ride. I saw it covered in CW online. ::008::

Yes, also met Dan. Best part of the ride was meeting these guys.
As far as brakes on flat track go, I rode in the years prior to brakes and in the transition year of '71 or '72. Brakes in the transition year is what caused my crash in San Jose. Dwayne Keeter, the rider in front of me had brakes and used them. I didn't have them and even though I threw the bike sideways, I couldn't burn off enough speed and ran into the back of Dwayne. The rest is a good, go through the fence right in front of one of Bruce Brown's cameras, and get in the movie. Bottom line for me is, I wish they never went to brakes on flat track. It was safer without them and made a much better show for the spectators. It also separated some of the riders skill wise, as not everyone had the ability to "back it in" to burn off speed.
Either way, I believe flat track is one of this country's most exciting sports. I wish I could get out to more races and enjoy them. I did go to last years Sacramento mile. I'm amazed at the talent and have a new hero, Brad Baker. I also think Shayna is incredible and if the AMA does not promote her, the sport will loose her to a big nascar team.
