I have just received in the mail the official recall notice for the USA (March 8 2014). My bike is a 2013 model, bought in California. The recall covers the 2009-2014 YZF-R1 and 2012-2013 XTZ1200 Super Ténéré. My dealer followed up on the letter by telephone.
Please note the following wording: "You should not ride your motorcycle until this modification is performed." (Lawyer's humor I guess)

Very glad I had this forum available as a resource for this issue... I keep thinking about what I would have had to go through ten years ago.

On a trip back from New Orleans my riding buddy pointed out that my left headlamp was flickering. I checked and the headlamp wire had a scorch mark and the plastic socket had melted. I left the headlamp wire disconnected and kept the aux lights on.

The next week day, I went to the nearest Yamaha dealer and showed them a printout of this post and they got with Yamaha Corp. That weekend they got the harness and had replaced my failing harness. The wires are much thicker, just like the photo in the prior post.

Just wanted to say thanks to you all for adding input to this forum.

Ya, Liability disclaimer. It really means that if you get into an accident because you couldn't see where you were going, we told you not to ride the bike dumb ass (not you, just generally) . :D :D

The dealers also get a "Do Not Sell" notice on the bikes affected by this recall. My dealer even has the pre owned S10's in stock tagged as Do Not Sell until they change the harnesses.

Yeah, like it was alright for you to risk riding it for the years while they were refusing to recognise the problem now the good old responsible manufacturer has taken urgent action and decided that it is so bad you mustn't ride until it is fixed. Cynical or what? Incidentally, there is no such "do not ride" wording on the UK recall. Judging by this forum, they have had almost as many instrument consoles fail but, unfortunately for us, that's not a safety issue so they can continue refusing to recognise it.

That wording is merely a product of our litigious society. Spend any amount of time here and you learn to read around the lawyer speak...

I did real good, got two recall letters in the same envelope, one for me and the other for another customer who bought a S10 at my dealer. I took the extra letter to the dealer and they mailed it to the correct owner.

Wow good thing I checked in on the ST site. Been away for a while, putting my efforts into restoring a 76 Yamaha DT 175. I started my ST tonight and the right headlight did not come on. Long story short, there was some silver/white powder stuff inside the light housing. I removed the harness from the bulb, wiped everything down, put some di-electric grease on the bulb prongs and the light works great. No signs of melting harness, but I think I got it in the bud.

I have not received a recall notice yet, but will be bringing the bike in to get the work done. Thanks again to this wonderful forum for the info.
