Base camp for Alegany and me.

Home sweet home.

Set up some flimsy rain tarp poles.

Began to sort through some gear.

Hey what’s that I see!? Why it’s a snifter of wax covered mule piss (many thanks pal o’ mine FYBob)! And I may have supplemented it later with a lil’ Gobbler 101 (my year ago birthday gift from El Toro Joe; I reckon we’ll celebrate belated b-days this year Joe)

I nursed the sipping spirits well into evening thoroughly enjoying the close of light night bird concerto set against the gentle white noise gurgle of Mill Creek and fire TV.

Dawn comes over Kumbrabow.

Time to head out the Turkey Bone and do some exploring.

Along US219S.

A violent fold.

EOM appetite whet.

Spent a week one day at this very spot during my first road trip aboard Snowflake.

Pocahontas Co. farmland fodder.

A freshly maintained wildlife opening on Middle Mountain Road.

EOM NOTE: You Sept fudpucks who insist on dual sporting your FJR ^^^this^^^ is THE road for you. The payoff on the other end is Glady Road to Alpena…paved bliss…turn up the wick!

Aleghany and me however had other locales to explore.

When we got to Durbin look who we found sitting in Station No. 2 Eatery. [Pause…set camera to super duty mode]…It’s ol’ slowride Chuck himself.

Day’s end.

Daybreak Day 3.

Chuck was silly enough to let me lead so I set my nasal GPS north.
After a few supplemental exploratory circle tours, subsequent routing recalibrations and an ample mix of surfaces including a full tri-axle load of flood repair loose 3-inch rip rap along the steeeeep northern slope of Pandusky Ridge Road, we eventually found ourselves here.

Personal assessment…great place to visit, but I wouldn’t much enjoy camping here. However the Middle Fork of the Buckhannon River sure looked inviting on a hot humid July day.

We headed into Belington for fuel. Chuck was too far too busy checking in to be sure mama had not shortened his leash to help [chickenshit] but I procured the makings for a fine supper at the Belington Shop-and-Save and we saddled up to bear determinedly south. [Note: Wolfman panniers make fine coolers in spite of the obvious color shortcomings].

Kingsville Road (blissfully sweeet newly surfaced twisties), Coalton Road, up and across Rich Mountain Road by the Battlefield and sharp descent into Beverly let us pick up US219S back to camp.

After a day in full gear and that special late July hot and sticky along multi-faceted roads our appetites were far too sharp for fiddling with a camera. But while quaffing down a few ice-cold malted hops and barley we rustled up culinary ecstasy; hand cut and tenderized charcoal smoked top round seasoned with spklbuk’s exclusive eclectic rub of pulverized Original Wise Sour Cream and Onion potato chips and bagged farmer’s mix greens.

It sure beat the hell out of Chuck’s earlier “Oh, I’ll just heat up a can of beans back in camp” ill-conceived [half-assed] notion.

The fittest bear hound in all of Randolph Co. wouldn’t have had a prayer against ol’ slowride in a steak and greens whoofdown!!

Day’s end.

Packed up to head home.

But first a short tour of Kumbrabow nicety.

Mill Creek at our campsite.

Mill Creek Falls

Current front runner of candidate sites for FODS East 2016.

Kumbrabow has gnomes covered too.

A few miles south on US219S and Alegany absolutely insisted we turn west here and head up Sharps Knob over into the Three Forks of the Gauley.

Of the three, I chose the South Fork route.

Grabbed some fuel and portable lunch at Y-Mart in Upper Glade and headed up Williams River.

Highland Scenic Highway at Tea Creek.

Picnic lunch with a view at Big Spruce Overlook.

A short botanical stroll to aid digestion.

A very proud [honkin’ huge mamajamma] Cinnamon Fern (for scale that hunk of sandstone in the left foreground is about 8 inches across).

Reindeer moss is really a lichen.

Scenes from the boardwalk.

Doug is that what I think it is? Invasive Tree of Heaven? Damn, that sucks big time!

Summit Lake lays further south along the Highland Scenic Highway.

Leaving the Mon until next time.

As usual, Jim... fantastic stuff!! Sure makes me miss the riding up there even more!
Thanks Harrison. Kumbrabow is a fantastic base camp location. I'd have to get you out of everything has to be dirt mode before making a run such as this.

Nice. I am always struck by how nice signs are in other parts of the country vs Montana where the locals seem to think a sign is a target. Count your blessing, you have a very well kept amazing area.

Unfortunately we have our share of sign shooting idjits too. I hunt same as they do but have never had the urge to take out a sign.

Come east to visit sometime, we'll have a look about.

Thanks Steve. As usual, I was just out doing my part to promote WV tourism while enjoying the countryside. I need to expand my horizons and get farther out, but find it hard to leave Almost Heaven.

I was also exploring possibilities for FODS East next year. I am tossing around the idea of Kumbrabow as a base camp. Great riding in all directions. Hope you will join us.

Nobody does that better than you. The state should really increase what they are paying you. I'm much more likely to go to WV and spend some money to ride with you vs reading a brochure and grabbing the keys.

Nice report. DM and I were just in Cass two weeks ago. I took her there through Back Mt Road. I forgot why I liked that one so much. She was not as enthused. The technical stuff really is not her thing.

Thanks Jon.

Have you ran the south end of Back Mt Rd to Edray? And then Woodrow Road over to the Scenic Highway at Tea Creek? Dirt Mom would likely not be enthused on either of those as well.

But you could bribe her with Williams River Road to Upper Glade (Cowen) and WV15 back over Gauley Mtn or Bergoo Road up the Elk River past Whitaker Falls to Valley Head for a full circle as the payoff...spectacular.

Definitely want to stop at the new location of The Custard Stand in Webster Springs, they don't have the contract to supply hot dog chili to Mountaineer Stadium for no reason! Or Ellie May's Sawmill Restaurant for fresh trout at Elk Springs Fly Fishing Resort if do the Bergoo route. Yeah Gov. Earl Ray should at least send me some travel $! ;)
