Does anyone have the Roadside assistance benefit provided by AMA. Supposedly for the cost of membership and providing a credit card for automatic renewal it is provided. Sounds reasonable if it works.

Worked great, the one time I needed them. It's a twofer when you sign up... supporting the Cause and a backup for you and yours if you need it.

I also have it and have not had to use it. There is a limit to towing distance if that matters for you.

I've been a long time member of AMA since long before they had this.
Without them we would all be walking, have no dirt access, or riding one of these:

Gawd!!! Talk about saving Us from ourselves! Those rims look like something I had on a BMX bike from the 80's.

I have a roadside assistance plan that covers ME and not my car necessarily...the bike is covered in this manner. perhaps others have this same coverage? maybe not if it is a factory program though? an AMA plan could be better in that they would provide a 'tow' by someone equipped to handle our bikes.
certainly something to figure out before you need it.

The AMA roadside assistance covers all my vehicles, both 2 and 4 wheels. When I had roadside assistance thru my vehicle insurer, it only covered the bike or car/truck that the policy covered. Had to pay extra for each vehicle.

I too have it and have had it since ama started it as a benefit. No two wheel use but did have the occasion with my suburban when the fuel pump crapped out. one bummer was that they would only tow it to a dealership on their list. i wanted it in my driveway to replace it myself for a fraction of the dealer price. I ate the $500 bill to fix it but had the mind to put the $65 part on myself in their parking lot.

This caused me to check and the bike policy is the same, to a dealer on their list. Luckily a close dearler is a few blocks up hill from my place :)

I have it and was going to use it once when I had a flat tire during a trip on the FJR. Basically they'll flatbed your bike to a location of your choosing. I seem to remember there's a 30 or 35 mile limit. Don't hold me to that though. In the end I didn't want some car guy strapping down my bike so I just pumped up the tire and bee-lined to a local bike shop for a plug.

After posting I noticed I could join for 3 years at $147.00 and still get the roadside service instead of having to select the automatic annual renewal option. As someone pointed out $49.00/year for motorcycle representation plus roadside service seems like a pretty good deal so I decided to join. Thanks for the responses, they helped me make up my mind.

I thought about getting it as well but I am on the fence. Got mixed feelings about the AMA. My membership is not up until April, but I have got 2 things in the mail for renewal, one offered the towing. It is still sitting on my desk..........decisions.

Not at all a fan of the AMA. I see it more as a fundraising organization than a motorcycle advocacy group. Like a charity that spends 96 cents of every dollar raised on salaries and the rent of fancy offices.

Google America's worst charities (won't let me paste link for some reason)

Anyway, I went to their offices/museum in Ohio and felt my membership dues were being misappropriated. Never have been able to find out what the payroll or expenses are, and I asked.

In this great Country of lawyers and lobbyists, the AMA is the one of the only voices speaking on behalf of 2-wheeled motorists. Hopefully they use more than 4 cents out of each dollar to bribe those bozos in Congress.

I have the AMA Roadside Assistance, and I have used it. It covers all my vehicles regardless of who is driving it.

My daughter has one of my cars at her college nearly 4 hours away from home. She had a battery issue that she was unable to deal with on her own. When her mechanically capable boyfriend was unable to get it going, I called the AMA service. They were there in a reasonable amount of time, and willing to either get the car in a drivable condition, or tow it to a dealer. It's my only experience with the service, but I was completely satisfied they did what they said they would do.

I have AMA and used the towing service just once when my sons R6 spun a rod bearing three weeks out of warranty. Wrecker showed up with a flat bed but was well equipped with a wheel chock and proper tie downs. So I was happy with AMA towing and was luckily under the mileage restrictions.

As a side note, my dealer went to bat for me on the broke bike with Yamaha and they covered the R6 engine and $3000.00 engine rebuild. ::012::

The AMA is nonprofit but not a charity. I seriously doubt it would show up on any list of charities, good or bad. It would be interesting to see a breakdown of where the money goes, though. Same for AARP, NRA and all of the major nonprofit "advocacy" groups.

I'm a member but have not had to use the towing service.

There are many more productive causes any "motorcyclist" can get involved in, than bashing the AMA.
