AltRider skid plate question

Can anyone speak to the clearance from the end of the oil filter to the AltRider skid plate?

I ask because I have a whole set of PureOne filters (used on my car and old bike). Happens to be the same filter that the S10 takes, but I read that the HB skid plate didn't leave enough room for even the short PureOne. Sure enough I put one on for my first change and it's just a few millimeters longer than the OEM was.

Thanks in advance!

Plate has to come down to replace the filter.

Thanks for the response!

I should clarify:

The HB plate fits too tightly for the PureOne...meaning that if you drop the plate and put a PureOne filter on, the plate won't go back on. Wondering if this is the case with the AltRider as well.

One poster (I'll have to see if I can find it) said the stock OEM filter will come off with the Altrider skid plate mounted. It just clears.

I have not verified it myself, but will do at my next oil change. In measuring it, it looks like it just might.

I think my question is still being misunderstood...but you guys may have answered it anyway :)

If it seems like there's room to actually take the OEM filter off with the skid plate on, I imagine there's room to mount a slightly longer filter. ::003::

Thanks for the feedback!

One of the guys I was riding with has the Altrider skid plate. He said you can do an oil change without dropping the plate if you take the mounting bracket off next to the filter. Easier than dropping the whole thing. I have the Altrider too, but I haven't had to do an oil change since I installed the plate. Hope it works for you.

I bought an Alt Rider plate but I haven't installed it yet 'cause I don't get the bike until Friday.

But what the OP is asking is NOT whether or not you can change the filter without dropping the plate, but will a longer filter like the Pure One still work or will the plate NOT go back on after it is removed?

If you can remove the stock filter with the plate still on, then I would imagine the Pure One is fine if you're okay dropping the plate at each change.

There is a shorter version of the Pure one that is the same length as the OEM. There aren't many good reasons to get a longer filter when there are so many brands offering the 2.5"

My honda ST1300 filters fit the S10..

I was able to change the oil w/plate on... I wanted to know in case I was on a long trip and wanted to save some time. I will say, some oil ends up getting between the plate and the rear bracket and seems to stay there so you get the annoying feeling you have an oil leak until it all drips out / dries out.

Is it possible? Yes and that's assuming the 2.5" filter. not sure about longer ones, you may just have to try and if it won't work then, well, there ya go.. LOL

Will I do it in the future? Not if the bike is in the garage and I'm not in a rush. Getting the plate off is a pain due to the screws on the forward right side but really just time-consuming. If I'm on a trip and don't want to mess with that extra effort it's nice to know I can do it.

Thanks for all the feedback.

It sounds like the PureOne will work, but if it doesn't, oh well. ::022:: filters are fine I'm sure...I'll just end up with a more long-term filter stock for the car (though my stock of filters might outlast the car...)

I agree, except that the OP already has a case of the longer ones and is hoping that they will work.

Actually I have the 2.5" filters. Despite being called the same length, the 2.5 PureOne is actually slight longer than the OEM

Update

Here's an update with some information on these filters, if anyone finds this thread while looking:

Actual external filter lengths differ among filters that are all called 2.5" (length must refer to filter media inside...)

Bosch 3300 (2.5") contacts AltRider skid plate: http://advrider.com/forums/showpost.php?p=18818249&postcount=12378
Actual measured lengths of Yammie filters: http://advrider.com/forums/showpost.php?p=18819073&postcount=12380

And finally...I just measured the overall length of my 2.5" PureOne filters and they are right at 3" long, which means a definite no-go with the HB plate according to the posts linked above. Still not sure what the actual external length of that Bosch 3300 is, but I'd be surprised if it's longer than 3"

Bummer.
