Altrider skid plate, oil filter contact

I installed my Altrider skid plate with no real issue following the supplied instructions. I noticed as the last step tightening up the left front bracket seem very close to the oil filter. Below is a pic, the lock nut is actually in contact with my oil filter. I've watched the video and read the installation post but don't see anything that I should have done differently.

I have an email into Altrider and I'm sure they will respond or I'll give them a call during business hours. Just wondering if anyone else had this issue or knows what I maybe can try to get some clearance here.

That's not good.... It seems like they have had some QC issues as of late... There were also some reported crash bars that weren't clearing the side panels.

These things happen.....it's how they take care of you after the sale. Report back when you gt this resolved.....an Altrider skid plate has been on my list.

If they blow you off, which I hope they certainly don't you might try this filter:

Yamaha 5GH-13440-20

It's 2.5" or very close to that, whereas the one you're running is a good 3/4" longer in length.

Good luck...

I just mounted this last weekend and was worried about this very thing. Its the only part of the skid plate that is a very poor design. A good enough hit and you are going to punch a hole in that oil filter.

Mine clears the stock sized filter (can't remember what the dang part number is, its a Hiflo 204) with enough room to change it without touching the Skidplate.

Mine did the same thing on a rough trail, lucky I spoted it. when I got home I took the plate off and used a grinder on the bolt and nut to make room. No problem now. ::008::

Are there problems coming from AltRider? There seem to me more and more reports of quality concerns. I was at the point of making a purchase, but I think I am going to wait and see what is happening with the company's follow up before I proceed. I don't need to get a product that requires grinding off items to make it work. I want something to fit the first and time and to fit right. The Tenere is the most fun bike I have ever ridden and I want to fun to continue without worries of parts not fitting or a rock takes the skip plate into the filter.

I think you are doing it wrong. :D

This is mine with a Fram Filter. It is longer than the stock Yamaha Filter. Nothing touches.
Even if the Stock AltRider hardware was used, it still would not touch. Pic angle may or may not do it justice here.
You might want to loosen ALL the Hardware for the Skid Plate and "move it around to lay better" then tighten up.
I'm betting it can be positioned more ideally to clear the filter. My two and a half cents.

(Like the nutplates instead of nuts and bolts?)

Mine fit just fine. I had no problems with installation and it's a quality product where with my type of riding I'm 99% sure I'll never have a problem with the design. I would not be worried with their quality, they build good stuff. I just don't like the look of that menacing nut and bolt so close to the filter.

My skidplate has taken some pretty rough hits as well. I'm not very good a judging obstacle height vs. ground clearance ::013::

I didn't see anything that indicates quality of the product is a concern. I'm thinking like EJV said I can loosen it up move it around to gain some clearance, kinda expecting that answer from Altrider. That plus the shorter filter should give me plenty of room. Should have some time in the shop this week with the blizzard coming in today so I'll give it a shot.

As recommended here and in the altrider reply, I loosened the plate and moved it to make space for the oil filter. The front right bracket seems to be the control of this space. It has slotted holes running from high left to low right. Originally I think I let gravity hold the plate low and right as I tightened this right front bracket. Today I loosened it all up and forced the front right bracket high and left before tightening. This gave me significant clearance to the filter compared to before.

Glad you were able to figure out...however it would be great if they'd mention something like that in the instructions. And if they did, make it more clear. I understand mods require some finaggling sometimes, but wish for once it'd be as easy as it "seems".

Kids. Sheesh.

I threw out the instructions when I mounted the Skid Plate. It gave me ten more Horsepower by doing that too!

This is an old thread but I am gonna bump it.

I noticed that after my recent install of the Altrider skid plate it, that bolt in the above pics was very close to the oil filter.

I did as suggested and loosened everything, then shifted it away and re-tightened to get more clearance.

But whilst I was loosening the bolts, I noticed that one of the 6 M8 x 25 flat head bolts was actually 1/8 inch shorter than the others.

The directions do not mention this.

Anyways...I used that one slightly shorter bolt at the position next to the oil filter and now it is flush with the nut instead of protruding.
So it creates just a little bit more clearance.

I don't know if this was a fluke or they have modified the supplied hardware and I got an older version of the directions.

BUT if you are installing an Altrider skid plate, compare the 6 M8 x 25 flat head bolts...if you have a shorter one, like I did, use it in that position.

I'm going to bump this again, this time for their crash bars.

The initial quality looks good, unwrapped them and found poor finishing on the O/S bar, almost like bubbling.

Then on fitment the connecting rod that bolts up to the front engine mount was so poorly tapped and counter sunk the screw would only screw in at an angle.

So I've had to re-tap the hole to get it to sit square.

With the bars mounted and jiggled about there is a worrying lack of clearance between the O/S bar where it wraps around the fairings leading edge and my SW Moto fork protector. (It's about 5mm).

I was going to go for the Touratech items but these where slightly cheaper, serves me right for being a cheapskate I suppose but these bars where still over £250 and that's a lot of green queens to hand over for an ill conceived sub standard product.

So do I put up with them, or demand my green queens back??

I'm surprised. I got mine earlier this year and they were in great shape and the fit/finish was great. Maybe they can swap you for a new set since those arrived NIGO.
