Altrider crashbars clearence from bodywork

I'm wondering if anyone with Altrider crashbars on their ST can tell me how close the right hand bar is to the front of the bodywork of the bike. I have just recently fitted a set and have found that the clearance between the bar and the bodywork at the very front is only about 3 mm (1/8 inch). It is so close that there is visible scuffing on the bodywork where the bar has made contact. I believe this is from the small amount of flex in the bodywork while riding. I have not ridden on any dirt roads since fitting the bars and the bars themselves are tight. I'm pretty sure there mounted correctly as I followed the instructions and there is really only one way they can fit. On the left side the clearance is about 20 mm (4/5 inch). The bike has never been dropped (yet) so I think it is fairly straight.

Can others with Altrider bars tell me what sort of clearance they have on the front right and whether the scuffing is occurring on other bikes.

The photos aren't great but you get the idea.

Cheers

No rubbing on mine. I even pulled on the plastic to get it to touch and takes considerable pull on plastic to get it to touch, and no way vibration would cause it to move that much. I have no answer for you. Is it possible you did it during install or removal of the side cover, and you just did not notice?

Mine was this close. I contacted Jeremy at AltRider and he changed mine out immediately. COntact him.

Thanks for the responses guys. Seems like it's 50-50 whether they are close or not. I'll take the matter up with the supplier and see what happens.

I was pretty careful on the install so don't think I did it then and I haven't taken the side cover off since I put the bars on.

I have a goo 15mm there, have you tried lossening the bolts all round and then retightning them with a bit more clearance?
I tried that when I first noticed the scuffing. I couldn't get any difference, the bars fit in one place and one place only. It was actually tough getting the bolts on the right side to line up with the threads from where the OEM black plastic buffers came off.

Fossil, If you can notice a major difference from RS bend to LS bend in that area, then there is an issue. As I mentioned, just call ALtRide and ask for Jeremy.

Thanks mate. I have gotten onto the distributor here in Oz and they are chasing it up with Altrider. If I don't here anything fairly quickly I will go directly to Altrider myself like you have suggested.

Just an update on this matter. I got onto the Australian distributor of Altrider crash bars and they had a look at mine. They agreed that the clearance was too close and with one of the directors of the company we fitted a new set. Exactly the same clearance. ::010:: He had a good like at my bike and agreed it seemed straight and the problem was with the bars. Another local S10 owner has exactly the same problem. As I said at the beginning of the post I have some scuffing on the bodywork from the bars being so close. The main issue though is that with them being that close If I do use them in anger and put it down on the right its pretty likely the bars will impact into the bodywork as there is no room for any flex.

We ended up installing them with about 5mm of spacers between the bars and the engine mount at the front. This gained a few mm of extra clearance around the bodywork but meant that to install the bolts on the side mountings we needed to put a ratchet strap from the rear grab handles to the bars to pull them back enough to get the bolts in. Definitely not a long term solution. We decided that the spacers would work fine it if the side mounting holes were moved back a similar distance.

The Aus distributor has been really good so far and they are chasing it up with Altrider to see what is going on. I'll see what the end result is. ::021::

Cheers

Glad this popped up as I just installed my bars yesterday. I did not notice any particular clearance issues, but now that you mentioned it I had to go and re-check.

Here's what I ended up with. Just enough room to squeeze a pinky finger in there. Given the way they bolt up, I cant imagine wiggling stuff around would gain you much. When it tightens, it tightens...

I did have an issue with another small AltRider part not fitting (sidestand switch cover) and they sent me a second one which also would not mount. Maybe there's a 'special feature' built into some of these machines randomly, just to keep us, and engineers, guessing.

I'd love ot have that much clearance. I had about 1/8 inch (3-4mm) until we fitted the spacers, no way I was getting a pinky in there.

I just installed a set on my bike this morning. Not nearly as close as you describe. And as others have posted, there sure is not any wiggleroom.
A little more clearance on the left side than right. Hopefully the body panels will come off easy.
All in all they look cool and im happy.

to the OP, I didn't see it mentioned, but by chance is your right cover panel fully seated? I can remove mine without issue with the bars on, have about 5/8 inch clearance at the right front corner.

That was one of the first things I thought when I put them on. Checked and it is seated correctly.
