I scored a fat Amazon gift card, so I'm looking for ideas on good preconfigured tool kits. I know the value of piecing one together, but since I have the giftcard, I might as well see if I can get a good premade one. I'm willing to go up to about $70-$80, but the tools should be good quality, as I intend to take my S10 into Kashmir in the fairly near future and I don't want to be stranded on the side of the road with snapped wrenches, stripped sockets, and broken ratchets. I do know that I'll have to buy a Yamaha plug socket.

I did find the thread here with members' tool lists, so I do have that to fill in any gaps in whatever set I find.

In the same vein, best tire tools? Particularly for use with Mitas Dakar-strength tires.

Every tire I've mounted, including the Mitas E07, has been done with the basic Motion Pro 11" tire levers. I use three of them. They're nice because basically they're just flat steel bars that can pack pretty tightly. To get the tire all the way off the rim, I've used a slightly longer plastic handled tire spoon (I'm not sure who made it). The spoon gives a little more leverage so I can hold the tire in place while I kneel on it to get it free from the wheel.

Motion Pro also makes a set of tire levers which also double as a bead breaker. I haven't used them, but I've seen them used in videos and they seem to work well. I break the beads on tires using a Motion Pro Bead Popper, which is just a plastic wedge that you whack with a hammer (or similar heavy object) to separate the bead from the bead channel. It's very simple and works well, but they don't seem to make it any more.

You are not going to get much for 80 bucks but I can recommend a few on board tools that will do 90% of any repair for around $250.00 total. I personally have and use all these tools.

Knipex pliers $33.00

Tekton Flex Head Wrench 8mm x 10mm. This little jewel will fit almost every small hex head fastener on the bike $21.00:

Motion Pro Bead Breaker Tool. This set is the larger, cheaper steel version. It will be much better than the compact lighter ones for stiff carcass tires $50.00

Motion Pro Axle Tool $25.00:

Motion Pro T6 Combo lever 27mm $23.00:

Quick Steel $11.00:

Wera Tool Check Plus. If there is any one single tool kit this is it. Racers the world over carry this kit. This is my go to for almost every fastener on my bike $80.00:

Good stuff, thanks. I already had the motion pro breaker and their rim protectors in my list. Am I correct in thinking that the combo lever gives me the axle nut wrench and another tire spoon? The Knipex pliers look like a great tool. I think what I might do is grab the specialized tools for now.

I came across a premade kit, which is rather more expensive. Anyone know if these guys are any good? Their S10-specific kit is $299; opinions on whether this is worth it?

The Adventure Designs Tool Kit Difference:

Complete: Includes all the tools your Yamaha Super Tenere requires. We did the painstaking research for you. Other kits “one size fits all” approach will leave you stranded because they are missing essential tools.

USA MADE QUALITY: Buy USA tools and you are investing in quality and are supporting hard working USA jobs. Buy cheap tools and you will get cheap results. Stripping or rounding a fastener is frustrating and costly and can leave you stuck on the side of the road. Our forged tools are made of 100% USA steel and are hot forged in the USA. The “other guys” cut corners by using cheap steel and by cold forging resulting in a soft inconsistent tool.

Compact: Only weighs 6 lbs. 2 oz. and measures L 9.5" W 5" H 5".

LIFETIME WARRANTY: We are so confident in the quality and craftsmanship of these tools that we back them with a lifetime warranty. In the unlikely event that a tool fails we will replace it. We have built these tools so you will be proudly passing them on to your grandchildren someday.

Adequate Torque: Other general purpose tool kits often fail to meet one essential motorcycle tool kit requirement. Can the drive tool provide enough torque to remove a wheel lug nut or axle nut? The answer all too often is “no, we forgot to think of that.” Every kit we sell includes a high torque tool configuration that will provide the leverage and torque required to remove a wheel…in fact…a very rusty wheel (we know this because we tried it, over and over again).

I like that Wera set Chris, thanks! It's in my Amazon cart for whenever I actually have discretionary income again...

The Mountain, we did have a member here who developed and produced a tool kit, you may want to check with him to see if he is still producing them:

It looks like he is. They're $220, so less than the Kickstarter promo: https://www.mcssl.com/store/rrr-tool-solutions/modular-moto-wrench-tool-set
