A lot of us have the ACD skid plate and one of our intrepid members hit his hard enough to bend it a bit. He said that he knew when he hit whatever it was. Later, when he removed the skid plate he found the oil filter looked like this.

There are at least two types of damage to be aware of in this one photo. You can see that the front face (left in photo) of the filter is misshapen and is no longer parallel to the mounting face. It's easily enough to dislodge the internal element so that this filter was probably not performing its function at all, letting dirty oil flow right back into the bearings, transmission, and rest of the delicate parts of the engine.

The filter has also been rubbing against the skid plate. With a little dirt or sand, it wouldn't take long to wear a hole through the wall of the can. These bikes don't have a low oil pressure light, they only have a low quantity light, so by the time the light comes on the delicate parts downstream of the filter have been starved.

When you take off the ACD plate to change oil, check the old filter and see if you have wear damage before just putting the skid plate back on.

I never did the MOD to mine (was it you or Bernie) so that the filter can be changed without removing the plate............

On a side note I was able to get it (35 mins or so) straightened out. Should have taken a "before" photo, I will try to get an "after" one tonight.

That looks familiar.... I just brappped through there on the Husky a week or two ago.

Pix of filters just like this reminds me that there really are only two skids worth a damn "if" you take this beast offroad. Skip all the drama and go get either the Ride-On-ADV or the Rumbux. I wager that neither of these skids have seen a filter like that.

I never did the mod to remove the filter without taking off the plate. I did the threaded rod mod though. takes about 5 minutes to take the plate off

My ACD plate did rub a bit, but I didn't use any spacers initially, just the altrider bars. Once I used a spacer nut on the mounting studs combined with the altrider bars then the rubbing ceased and I haven't had a rubbing issue again. I am guessing, but the gap is about 1/8" or more now.
