Hi guys although not an active poster I have received valuable info here for my 2014 10, being based in Philippines its difficult to obtain knowledgeable mechanics.

Yesterday approaching a bend a little fast I stepped on the rear braked, wheel locked up and put me into the fish tail. Fortunately did not loose control so ended up OK. Just a nasty fright. The bike has done 16,000 KMs. Obviously the ABS is not working and my local good mechanic really does not know where to start...Apart from suggesting first we change brake fluid.

I have spent hours searching this site, being a non tech guy its kinda hard to understand most of whats written. Any tips on this would be extremely appreciated.

You need to start one step at a time, with simple (sometimes overlooked) matters. Does the ABS light come on when the ignition key is turned on, and does the light go off when you start to move?

Sorry for the stupid question but what surface were you on? Did the wheel lock up and stay locked up? If the surface was loose it can be easy to have the ABS activate.

The Yamaha maintenance manual has very clear instructions to step through troubleshooting the system. The manual is available and he needs to have a copy.

The braking system is common to the 2010-2013, so you may be able to find a used copy.




btw - Posting a copy of mx manual pages here or links to bootleg copies is illegal (US site and US copyright laws) and can get members banned.

1. Under the seat find a 4 pin connector.
2. Use a mini screw driver to remove the rubber bungs. Dun loose them.
3. Use a jumper wire n jump the blue n black wire connector.
4. Kill switch set to off.
5. On the key. Note that the abs warning light on the clocks is flashing. If not flashing the jumper isn't right.
6. Press the start button n hold for 5 secs.
7. Now simultaneously hold down the brake lever n rear brake pedal n dun let go. The abs pump will first run the front then rear then front again.

Note. Battery needs to be charged.
Do this procedure when brakes r bled.

If u don't feel the pulsations on the lever or pedals then the pump is faulty. Lever n pedal has separate actuation.

@rbm - Did you buy the bike new, or used? If used, it may be possible that the original owner de-activated the ABS by removing the ABS fuse. It may also be as simple as that fuse being bad. The ABS fuse location LINK

Yes, and it stays on. The common method of installing a manual ABS off switch simply installs a switch in the circuit to the ABS fuse. You can turn it off on the fly and the ABS light comes on, stays on, and you have no ABS. Flicking the switch to on returns power to the ABS fuse circuit, but you still have to shut the bike off, key off, then re-start to get ABS back and have the light behave as normal again.

Likely just time zone differences. Not to mention needing to check things that were posted about. It would have been helpful if the OP told us if the ABS light was coming on, and staying on, or never on, even in start up sequence.

The only other thing I can think of at the moment for ABS not functioning, and normal ABS light operation, is a stuck piston in the ABS motor. That typically only happens on older bikes that haven't had the brake fluid changed over very long periods and no ABS use ever to cycle the piston/fluid. A ring of corrosion develops around the piston, (due to moisture content in the brake fluid), locking it in place. It would be possible at 16k kms under certain conditions, given the island nature of the PI and saltwater proximity, but would not be the first thing I suspected.

I understand. But what you described does happen. I suspect the forum responses lead to a solution for the OP and they just never come back to post a final update on what worked.

Too bad, those resolution reports really help others later.

I too, am not trying to be negative. But, is the ABS really not working? My personal experience with ABS in the corners is that it is kind of sketchy. With other bikes equipped with ABS, not the Tenere, wheel lock while leaned over is much more likely than straight up. And as inquired about above, we don't know the road surface or experience level of the rider. ABS is not a cure-all. It helps, and I would not have a bike without it, but you can still lock a wheel on an ABS bike. :)

I'll concur with Sierra1, I thought that the S10 ABS system did not function when leaned over, something I remember readings a few years back............................

Sorry I should of been more precise in my post. It happened on tar seal, the light is functioning normally. On when starting and off after a few meters travel. This sounds like the idiot I guess I am, when checking the fluid I find it is empty, for how long I cannot say as I rely on my mechanic doing oil changes to check this, my bad.

I have DOT 4 and it is going in to have both front and rear filled, plus the drain holes of the ABS unit to be checked and cleaned. The fluid must be leaking some where so this must sorted.
I have learned so much on this forum and thanks to all whom have taken the time to reply.
